Cook Italy

June 2, 2011

Five of our young men were taken on an Italian adventure without ever leaving the Boys Campus kitchen.  Thanks to Chef Bobby Trevino of Chicago’s Italian Village Restaurants, a little taste of Italy was brought to Mercy Home during the Cook Italy event on Wednesday, May 25.  Trevino, and his sous chef, Brian Kellog, cooked a delicious meal, with the help of our youth, of pasta with red peppers, broccoli and shrimp.

As part of the Cook Italy program, our young men spent an evening enjoying what Italy is perhaps best known for—food.  To start the evening off, they attended a nutrition class taught by Cook County Health & Hospitals System educator, Bettina Tahsin, which focused on the healthy elements of the evening’s meal.  Tahsin captured the young men’s attention with game of Jeopardy, in which the winning team was allowed to eat first.   After the nutrition class, all of our young men gathered together in the cafeteria for dinner, each vying for extra shrimp.

This program, which provides our young people with valuable nutritional information, as well as exposing them to new foods and the Italian culture, could not have been possible without its supporters.  A special thanks to John Nitti, President of Isola Imports Inc. and the Cook Italy program, who donated some of the food for the evening.  Also, thanks to our friends at the Italian American Chamber of Commerce, who planned the evening’s activities, Bettina Tahsin, and Chef Bobby Trevino and sous chef Brian Kellog.
