Thrilling Finale for Hoops to Homework

May 24, 2011

In a nail biting championship game on Monday night, the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks battled it out to the very end.

DePaul University’s gymnasium was rocking with current and former youth, as well as Hoops to Homework coaches, co-workers and Mercy Home friends, cheering on their favorite team to the bitter end.  Rather than take sides, Fr. Scott cheered on both teams, pleased that youth on both teams were giving their best efforts to claim the title.

At halftime, all fans were invited onto the court for a free throw contest.  Campbell Home resident, Terry, took home the title by defeating out over 40 participants.  The second annual Tommy Eckles award was also announced at halftime, given to Kelly Home’s own, Mohamed.  The award goes to the Hoops to Homework player who demonstrated commitment, dedication and good sportsmanship throughout the season.

As the championship game progressed, both teams showed their worthiness of the 2011 Championship title.  With just over two minutes left in the game, the two teams were tied, 60-60.  The Knicks pulled away down the stretch, defeating the Lakers 74-65.
