Tutor's Story
"I need help with my homework!" is the frequent cry of many young people who reside at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Jack Lord is a heroic weekly volunteer who has answered this distress call for over six years.
Jack began tutoring in the fall of 2001. Since that time, he has tackled Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and even Calculus, as well as a myriad of other subjects, helping the young ladies at Mercy Home's Girls' Campus to gain understanding and mastery of their work. Jack has decreased the girls' fear of math and increased their confidence in approaching their homework. He has developed several mentoring relationships with the residents of Mercy Home, who consider Jack to be an adoptive grandfather.
Colleen, a former resident who is now a sophomore in college, still keeps in touch with "Grandpa Jack", and credits him with helping her to graduate from high school.
Mercy Home residents attend area private and public schools, and get help with their homework through a volunteer tutoring program, located at the Home, Mondays through Thursdays. Not all tutors have to be math whizzes!
Always one to go above and beyond, Jack has recruited several other tutors, for whom he coordinates transportation every week. Mercy Home is so appreciative of Jack's contributions, as well as those of the more than 170 other volunteers who come weekly and make the program such a success.
