Congratulations to Cardinal Blase Cupich!

cardinal

All of us at Mercy Home would like to congratulate Archbishop Blase Cupich, who will be elevated to Cardinal by Pope Francis Saturday, November 19. The ceremony will be held at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy.

Cardinal-elect Cupich will be invested as a part of a consistory, or church council, and the closing of the Jubilee Year of Mercy designated by Pope Francis. Cupich is one of 17 new cardinals, three of whom hail from the United States. Our own Fr. Scott will join the delegation from Chicago to attend the consistory and Papal Mass.

Before this ceremony takes place, the Cardinal-elect will be at our boys campus Monday, November 7, to continue the Anti-Violence committee he began earlier this year. The purpose of this committee is to develop strategies for working with communities to reduce violence, partnering with other religious organizations and civic officials, as well as reviewing resources within the Archdiocese to assess how best to address the tragedy of violence in the Archdiocese of Chicago and beyond.

Fr. Scott and Msgr. Michael Boland, President & CEO of Catholic Charities, have been tasked as co-chairmen of this ongoing committee established by Cardinal-elect Cupich. The Atlantic magazine recently interviewed Fr. Scott regarding this initiative and the Cupich’s appointment to the College of Cardinals. Fr. Scott shared that he feels privileged and humbled to work on behalf of Mercy Home to address an issue that so closely affects the lives of many of the children in our care.

Congratulations, Cardinal Cupich!
