Helping Your Teen Find a Job: Tips for Resume Writing and Organization

Resumes are a single sheet of paper showing your best accomplishments and experience. Here are some tips for writing and organization:

Tip #1:

Resumes are a single page, so your teen needs to include as much information as possible without being too wordy. Complete sentences and words like, “I,” are not necessary. For example: Learned MS Publisher and taught new students. Organized fundraiser and raised $500 during event.

Tip #2:

Within each resume section, information needs to be presented in the same format. This makes it much easier for a reader to follow.

Tip #3:

Make sure your child saves their resume on the computer using a clear title like “A.Smith Resume,” or, “Resume for Amanda Smith.” This way there will be no mistaking what it is and who it is from.

Tip #4:

There are a myriad of resume writing websites; just use a search engine to find samples. Here is a basic example found through Google on Office on Youth: http://www.officeonyouth.com/.
