Young Man Explores Passion for Photography

Seth's Photo Showcase

Over the last several months, Seth, one the young men living at Mercy Home for Boys & Girls, has enjoyed a unique photography internship.

Since June, Mercy Home Communications Coordinator Christa Rooks has guided Seth in weekly sessions as he explored his interest in photography. Lessons included tutorials on how to use a digital single-lens reflex camera and how photographers use techniques such as perspective, composition, and framing to capture compelling pictures.

“Christa is a great photographer,” Seth said. “She’s taught me a lot, like how to shoot diagonal photos, how to shoot from different levels, and new tricks, like how to use the manual focus.”

Before the internship, Seth considered himself a decent photographer, but he couldn’t pass up a chance to sharpen his expertise and eye for detail.

“Photography is one of my passions,” he said. “I’ve always loved it. But when I heard a photography class opened up, I sprang into action. I thought it’d be a good idea to take it and improve my skills.”

Seth practiced his new found skills while taking photos in public spaces around Mercy Home and during special outings to dog parks and the beach.

“Seth is very enthusiastic and shows a natural talent for photography,” Christa said. “He’s a very outgoing kid and eager to learn. I really enjoy teaching him about photography.”

Seth’s photographs are currently showcased in a gallery here at Mercy Home. He has invited all of Mercy Home’s coworkers are invited to visit the gallery, leave comments, and vote for their favorite photo.

Relationship building is the heart and soul of Mercy Home, where mentors and advocates foster the development of our kids’ interests. A very special thank you to Christa for helping Seth delve deeper into his passions as he continues to make strides.
