Our young men have once again joined forces with our nation’s veterans to give back to the community.

On a recent Saturday, boys and coworkers from Noha, Campbell, and Daley Home traveled to Beacon Therapy High School for a service project with The Mission Continues, a nation-wide veteran’s organization that helps former soldiers transition to civilian life through community outreach.

Our boys teamed up with The Mission Continues in January of this year, providing much-needed rehabilitation to the facilities of a South Chicago community services agency. This project marks their fourth partnership with the veteran’s organization.

As a leader of the 2^nd Chicago Chapter (referred to as “Platoons”) of The Mission Continues,  Rob Schuler of Daley Home has been crucial in coordinating and including our boys with these projects, and this time was no different. The idea for this assignment, however, came from an unlikely source—Beacon Therapy High School student and Daley Home youth Kamaron.

Kamaron had noticed that many of his school’s facilities badly needed new coats of paint, as well as other beautification touches around the grounds. As a veteran of past Mission Continues projects, Kamaron knew just what to do.

“First, I asked Rob, do [the veterans do projects] for free,” Kamaron recalls. After he confirmed he could count on Rob and his Platoon for help, he talked to his school principal, Joan Gross.

“I told her I had somebody to come to fix the school up,” Kamaron said.

Ms. Gross was overjoyed to hear the news, saying that it was nice “to have one of our students advocate for us.”

Rob, Kamaron, and the rest of the volunteers spent most of their Saturday, painting, cleaning, and beautifying the school’s campus—including Principal Gross’s office!

Kamaron says he felt good fixing up his school, and hopes other students will appreciate and take pride in their school’s new look.
