There’s a story about a CEO of a major company who realized that he had given up so much of his time for work and travel that he was missing spending time with his children and his family. And so he read this article and tried to figure something out. He read that the average lifespan was about 75 years old. And so this is what he did, he multiplied 75 by 52 weeks in the year, which equaled 3,900. And so that meant, in his mind, 3,900 Saturdays in an average lifespan. And then he thought about his age at the time, he was 55. And he realized that he had at least 1,000 Saturdays until he would turn 75. And that, he said, was a wake up call for him. And so this is what he did. He went out and he bought 1,000 marbles and he put them in two jars that lined his office. And he took one marble out of the jar each Saturday to remind him, make that day count. Make that day count. And the diminishing marbles helped him focus on the important things of life, his family. And he realized that any Saturday after 75, like really each day, would be a gift from God. Jesus reminds us today that we all have a fixed number of marbles, if you will, in our lifespan. And the spirit of this gospel reminds us to keep in mind the brevity, the brevity of our life. But not with sadness or fear but with hope and joy with gratitude for these days and one day for the new life that God promises us will come. And so friends, today I’d ask you to think about one thing that you might do to live his day with joy and showing some special kind of love for another. That’s the perfect way to show God that we are grateful for the gift of each day and to make today and to make every day count.
