Third Sunday of Easter Homily Transcript

I just want to take this opportunity

As we gather to celebrate eucharist,

To ask that we all remember Pope Francis at mass this morning,

And in the weeks and in the months to come,

What a wonderful, humble pope that we had among us.

He led us with great humility.

He led us by example.

He led us by the example of St. Francis,

After whom he chose his name for the papacy.

Francis, who said, “preach the gospel, use words if you must.”

Pope Francis did that so beautifully

As he preached the gospel,

Showing us how to live as disciples of the risen Lord.

The following presentation is made possible

By the generosity of the viewers of Sunday Mass at Mercy Home

For Boys and Girls in Chicago.

Good morning, and welcome to Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.

Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter.

My name is dan riley.

I am joined by Tom McNamara and Joyce McQuiggan,

And our celebrant is Father Greg Sakowicz.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ A place called home with comfort for the weary. ∫

∫ A place called home of nourishment and rest. ∫

∫ A place called home that welcomes in the stranger. ∫

∫ Where one unknown becomes a welcome guest. ∫

∫ Where love can find a human habitation. ∫

∫ God grant us all this grace. A place called home. ∫

Good morning, and welcome as we continue our Easter season.

We begin our prayers, as we begin all things;

In the father and of the son and of the holy spirit.

-Amen.

The Lord be with you.

-And with your spirit.

Our God is loving, compassionate, and always forgiving.

We are sinners who take a moment of silence

And ask forgiveness and the Lord’s mercy.

Lord have mercy.

-Lord have mercy.

Christ have mercy.

-Christ have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

-Lord have mercy.

May almighty God have mercy on us.

Forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.

-Amen.

As God’s forgiven family, we sing praise to our God:

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫

∫ And on earth peace to people of good will. ∫

∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫

∫ And on earth peace to people of good will. ∫

∫ [Music] ∫

And together let us pray for the grace

To follow Christ more closely.

May your people exalt forever, o God,

In renewed youthfulness of spirit.

Through rejoicing now in the restored glory of our adoption.

We look forward in confident hope

Through rejoicing of the day of resurrection.

Always through Christ our Lord.

-Amen.

A reading from the acts of the apostles.

When the captain and the court officers

Had brought the apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin,

The high priest questioned them.

“We gave you strict orders, did we not,

To stop teaching in that name?

Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching

And want to bring this man’s blood upon us.”

But peter and the apostles said in reply,

“We must obey God rather than men.

The God of our ancestors raised Jesus,

Though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree.

God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior

To grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins.

We are witnesses of these things, as is the holy spirit

Whom God has given to those who obey him.”

The Sanhedrin ordered the apostles to stop speaking

In the name of Jesus and dismiss them.

So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin,

Rejoicing that they had been found worthy

To suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.

The word of the Lord.

-Thanks be to God.

∫ Than to trust in princes. ∫

A reading from the book of revelation.

I, john, looked and heard the voices

Of many angels who surrounded the throne

And the living creatures and the elders.

They were countless in number,

And they cried out in a loud voice,

“Worthy is the lamb that was slain,

To receive power and riches, wisdom and strength,

Honor and glory and blessing.”

Then i heard every creature in heaven

And on earth and under the earth and in the sea.

Everything in the universe cry out, to the one

Who sits on the throne and to the lamb be blessing

And honor and glory and might forever and ever.

The four living creatures answered, “amen.”

And the elders fell down and worshipped.

The word of the Lord.

-Thanks be to God.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫

∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫

∫ Christ is risen, creator of all. ∫

∫ He has shown pity on all people. ∫

∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫

The Lord be with you.

-And with your spirit.

A reading from the gospel according to john.

-Glory to you, o Lord.

At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples

At the Sea of Tiberius.

He revealed himself in this way.

Together with Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus,

Nathaniel from Cana and Galilee, Zebedee’s sons

And two other disciples.

Simon peter said to them, “I’m going fishing.”

They said to him, “we’ll also come with you.”

They went out into a boat together.

That night they caught nothing.

It was already dawn.

Jesus was standing on the shore.

The disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus.

And Jesus said to them,

“Children, have you caught anything to eat?”

They answered him, “no.”

He said to them, “cast a net over the right side of the boat

And you will find something.”

They cast it.

We’re not able to pull it in

Because of the number of large fish.

“Disciples whom Jesus loves,” said to peter,

“It is the Lord.”

When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord.

He tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad,

And jumped into the sea.

The disciples came into the boat.

They too were not far from shore, only about 100 yards,

Dragging the net with the fish. They climbed out on shore.

They saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread.

And Jesus said to them,

“Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore,

Full of 153 large fish.

Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.

And Jesus said to them, “come, have breakfast.”

And none of the disciples dared to ask him,

“Who are you?”

Because they realized it was the Lord.

Jesus came over and took the bread

And gave it to them in the very same way, the fish.

This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to the disciples

After being raised from the dead.

The gospel of the Lord.

-Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

This little 10-year-old boy is in the backyard,

Joey, digging a hole.

The old man from next door comes over and says,

“Joey, what are you doing?”

And joey says, “I’m digging a hole

Because my goldfish died.”

The elderly man said, “oh, joey, my deepest sympathy,

But why is the hole so big? Why is the hole so big?”

And joey says, “because my dead goldfish

Is inside your dead cat.”

[Laughter]

Oh, i like that one.

About 10 years ago, I was talking to a man in his 30s,

Very successful, owned a beautiful home,

Big salary, a man climbing up the ladder of success.

But he was not happy.

He was not at peace.

He said something to me I will never forget.

He said, “I’m chasing after achievements in my life

Because I’m missing something, and that something is God.”

There’s an important theme worth exploring in today’s gospel.

It centers on the opening episode of the disciples at sea.

They’re confused, they’re lost, and they’re empty.

Life is missing something.

They are still reeling from the death of their master, Jesus.

They don’t know what to do with themselves,

And so, in a kind of reflex action,

They revert to their old trade, they go fishing.

The unprofitable night indicates that both

Figuratively and literally, they caught nothing.

The voice asks, “have you caught anything?”

The answer, “we’ve labored all night,

And we have caught nothing.”

And we pause on hearing this.

Aren’t those frequently our words?

How often have we, in one form or another,

Spoken them after trying to pick up the pieces

After the death of a loved one?

A severe sickness, a setback,

The loss of a job, depression, divorce, the empty nest?

Nothing. We’ve caught nothing.

We are discouraged. We are terribly saddened.

Listen to the story that was given to me some years ago.

I was driving home from work one day.

I stopped to watch a local little league baseball game

That was being played in a park near my home.

As i sat down behind the bench on the first baseline,

I asked one of the boys, “what was the score?”

He said, “we’re behind 14-nothing.” With a giant smile.

“Oh, really?” He said.

I said, “i have to say that, when being down 14-zero,

You don’t look discouraged.”

The boy had a puzzled look on his face.

“Why should we be discouraged?

We have not been up to bat yet.”

There was a reason to hope.

Resurrection means new life, new hope.

The Lord is with us, resurrection.

Only the Lord can feel what we are truly looking for in life.

If we really think about it, this evening,

Before going to bed, turn all your worries over to God,

Because God will be up all night anyway.

Together we profess our apostles creed:

I believe in God, the father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the holy spirit,

Born of the Virgin Mary,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

On the third day, he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven,

And is seated at the right hand of God, the father almighty,

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the holy spirit,

The holy catholic church, the communion of saints,

Forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body,

And life everlasting.

Amen.

With confidence, faith, and joy,

We bring the Lord, our needs, our prayers, our very lives.

Our response to each prayer will be, “Lord, hear our prayer.”

For our holy father and all who proclaim

The resurrection of Christ to those who do not yet believe.

We pray to the Lord.

-Lord, hear our prayer.

For an end to the violence in the world,

May God’s peace and a spirit of reconciliation prevail.

We pray to the Lord.

-Lord, hear our prayer.

For the boys and girls of Mercy Home,

May they feel the light, love, and hope

Of the resurrected Christ in their lives.

We pray to the Lord.

-Lord, hear our prayer.

For those who are suffering, may the risen Lord bring them solace.

We pray to the Lord.

-Lord, hear our prayer.

Loving God, we ask you to hear our prayers,

Always made known through Christ our Lord.

-Amen.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ [Music continues] ∫

And pray, my sisters and brothers,

That our sacrifice will be acceptable to God,

The father, the almighty.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands.

For the praise and glory of his name,

For our good and the good of this holy church.

Amen.

Receive, o Lord, we pray,

These offerings of your exultant church,

And, as you have given her cause for such great gladness.

Grant also that the gifts we bring

May bear fruit in perpetual happiness.

Always, through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Lord be with you.

-And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

-It is right and just.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

At all times to acclaim you, o Lord,

But at this glorious time, above all,

To laud you even more gloriously

When Christ our Passover has been sacrificed.

For he is the true lamb, who has taken away the sins of the world.

By dying, he has restored our death.

By rising, he has restored our life.

Therefore, overcome with paschal joy,

We together sing your hymn of praise:

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Holy, holy, holy, ∫

∫ Lord God of hosts, ∫

∫ Heaven and earth are full of your glory. ∫

∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫

∫ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. ∫

∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫

You are indeed holy, o Lord, the fount of all holiness.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray,

By sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall,

That they may become for us the body and blood of your son,

Our Lord Jesus Christ.

At the time he was betrayed and entered into his passion,

Jesus took bread and giving thanks, broke it,

Gave to the disciples, saying, “take this, all of you,

And eat of it, for this is my body,

Which will be given up for you.”

When supper was ended, he took the chalice,

And once more giving thanks,

Gave to the disciples, saying, “take this, all of you,

And drink from it,

For this is the chalice of my blood,

The blood of the new and eternal covenant,

Which will be poured out for you and for many,

For the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.”

The mystery of faith.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ When we eat this bread and drink this cup, ∫

∫ We proclaim your death, o Lord, until you come again. ∫

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his life, death,

And resurrection, we offer you, Lord,

The bread of life and the chalice of salvation,

Giving thanks that you’ve held us worthy

To be in your presence and minister to you.

Humble, we pray,

That partaking of the body and blood of Christ

We be gathered into one by the power of the holy spirit.

Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world

And bring her to the fullness of charity

Together with blase our bishop, the bishops, clergy,

Religious brothers and sisters,

And all who serve in your faith communities.

Remember also our brothers and sisters

Who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection

And all who have died in your mercy.

In a very special way,

All deceased loved ones who have gone home to God.

Welcome them into the light of your face.

Have mercy on us all, we pray,

With the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God,

Blessed Joseph her spouse,

The blessed apostles, and all the saints

Who have pleased you throughout the ages,

May merit to be co-heirs to eternal life,

And may praise and glorify you

Through your son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Through him, with him, and in him,

O God, almighty father, in the unity of the holy spirit,

All glory and honor is yours forever and ever.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Amen, amen, amen. ∫

With confidence, faith, and joy, as an Easter people,

We then together pray:

Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those

Who trespass against us,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil.

Grant peace in our days,

That by the help of your mercy,

We are always free from sin and safe from all distress,

As we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior,

Jesus Christ.

The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

Now and forever.

And Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles,

“Peace I leave you, my peace i give you.”

Look not upon our sins,

But on the faith of your church, and grant us peace and unity,

In accordance with your will,

Who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Amen.

May the peace of the Lord be with all of you.

-And with your spirit.

Share the Lord’s peace and joy with those around us.

For those that are praying at Mercy Home

From all of us here, where you may be

At a nursing home, a home facility,

From all of us at Mercy Home, to each one of you,

God’s blessings, peace, and the Lord’s joy.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Lamb of God, ∫

∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫

∫ Have mercy on us. ∫

∫ Lamb of God, ∫

∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫

∫ Have mercy on us. ∫

∫ Lamb of God, ∫

∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫

∫ Grant us peace. ∫

Behold the lamb of God,

Behold him who takes away the sins of the world,

Blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb.

Lord, i am not worthy that you shall enter my roof,

But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

∫ [Music] ∫

For those of you at home,

Please turn to page 6 in your tv mass guide and join in singing

Our communion song, “peace be not anxious.”

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Peace now I give to you, my peace i pour through you, ∫

∫ Not as the world gives, but ever more sure. ∫

∫ Past all understanding, this gracious commanding, ∫

∫ Peace be not anxious, God holds you secure. ∫

∫ Peace be not anxious, our maker is gracious, ∫

∫ Think now of the lilies; they toil not, nor spin. ∫

∫ Fields lush with adornment, all Solomon’s raiment, ∫

∫ Still never could rival the splendor therein. ∫

∫ Peace now i give to you, my peace i pour through you, ∫

∫ Not as the world gives, but ever more sure. ∫

∫ Past all understanding, this gracious commanding, ∫

∫ Peace be not anxious, God holds you secure. ∫

And together let us pray.

Look at the kindness upon your people,

O Lord, and grant, we pray,

That those you were pleased to renew by eternal mysteries,

Maintain in their flesh the incorruptible glory

Of the resurrection.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Lord be with you.

-And with your spirit.

Bow our heads and pray for God’s blessings.

May God, by the resurrection of his only begotten son,

Was pleased to confer on you

The gift of redemption and of adoption,

Give you gladness and blessing.

Amen.

May he, who is redeeming work,

Who received the gift of everlasting freedom,

Make you heirs to eternal life.

Amen.

And may you, who have already been risen

With Christ in baptism through faith,

Be living in a right manner on this earth,

Unite with him one day in heaven.

Amen.

And may the blessing of almighty God,

The father, the son, and the holy spirit,

Descend upon all of us forever and ever.

Amen.

Our celebration has ended. Our Easter season continues.

We go in peace.

-Thanks be to God.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! ∫

∫ His the scepter, his the throne. ∫

∫ Alleluia! His the triumph, his the victory alone… ∫

My friends, i just want to thank you

We begin our prayers, as we begin all things;

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ The stone rejected by the builders ∫

∫ Has become the cornerstone. ∫

∫ The stone rejected by the builders ∫

∫ Has become the cornerstone. ∫

∫ Give praise to the Lord, for he is good. ∫

∫ His mercy endures forever. ∫

∫ It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. ∫

∫ It is better to take refuge in the Lord ∫

∫ Than to trust in princes. ∫

∫ The stone rejected by the builders ∫

∫ Has become the cornerstone.

[Laughter]

Homily Video

Third Sunday of Easter Homily Transcript
