Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Homily Transcript

The following presentation is [music] made possible by the generosity of the viewers of Sunday Mass at Mercy Home [music] for Boys and Girls in Chicago. Good morning and welcome to Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Today we celebrate the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time. My name is Dan Riley. I am joined by Tom McNamera and Maad [music] Carr. And our celebrant is Father Scott Donahue, president of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear [singing] you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm [singing] of his hand.

We gather as a community of faith around the table of the Lord to celebrate the eukarist. As we offer our prayer in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with each of you. And with your spirit. My friends, as we gather, we’re invited just to pause for a moment to acknowledge all the good gifts that God brings into our lives, to also acknowledge our faults and failings, and to seek the Lord’s merciful and loving forgiveness. Lord Jesus, as we gather this day, we ask that you might deepen our faith. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. We ask that you might strengthen our sense of hope in this world of ours. Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. We ask that you teach us to love as you love us. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. May almighty God have mercy on us. Forgive us of our sin. Bring us to life everlasting. Amen.

Glory to God [singing] in the highest and on earth peace to people [singing] of good will.

Glory to [singing and music] God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will. [singing]

My friends, let us pray.

Oh God, strength of those who hope in you. Graciously hear our prayers and since without you moral frailty can do nothing, grant us always the help of your grace that in following your commands we may please you by our resolve and by our deeds. through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the book of Exodus. In those days, the Israelites came to the desert of Si and pitched camp. While Israel was encamped here in front of the mountain, Moses went up the mountain to God. Then the Lord called to him and said, “Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob, tell the Israelites, you have seen for yourselves how I treated the Egyptians and how I bore you up on eagle’s wings and brought you here to myself. Therefore, if you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people, though all the earth is mine. You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

We are [singing] his people, the [music] sheep of his flock. We are his people, [singing and music]

the sheep of his flock. Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him singing [music] for joy. [singing] We are his people, the [music] sheep of [singing] his flock.

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans. Brothers and sisters, Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person, one might find courage to die. But God proves his love for us and that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath? Indeed, if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his son, how much more once reconciled will we be saved by his life? Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Lord be with each of you. And with your spirit. Ours is a reading taken from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’s heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned like sheep without a shepherd. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few. So ask the master of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest.” Then he called his 12 disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The name of the twel apostles are these. First, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. Philillip and Bartholomew. Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphus and Thaddius, Simon from Canaa, and Judas a Scariot who betrayed him. Jesus sent these 12 after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather after the lost sheep of Israel, and as you go, make this proclamation. The kingdom of God is at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse leper, drive out demons. Without cost you have received, without cost you are to give. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

This past Christmas season, which seems like a long time ago, one of our donors, very good person, a very generous person, sent to Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, about 500 figures just like this. Now, I don’t know how good our cameras are, but let me describe what I’m holding up before you. It is a little rubber Jesus with his arms outstretched proclaiming the good news. I had so much fun with this during the Christmas season. I’d go up to our young people here at Mercy Home, the kids here entrusted to our care, and I’d hand them one of these and I said, “I want you to have Jesus for Christmas. And I’d hand it to my co-workers, too. And I’d say, “Here, I want you to have Jesus for Christmas.” Isn’t that what this is all about? being disciples of the Lord, bringing the Lord to one another, inviting others to get involved with the life and the mystery and the love of God in our lives. Bringing Christ and the light of Christ to others is what it’s all about. In in the gospel today, we hear a very important statement, the most important perhaps in all of the gospel that the kingdom of God is at hand. That one sentence, that one line in the scripture is called the charurrima. It’s the key statement of the gospel that the kingdom is here and now. That Jesus has come into the world and into our lives. And then everything else follows from that that we are to bring the gospel. We are to bring the light of Christ. We are to bring and give Jesus to one another. And we best do that by the ways in which we care for one another. In the ways in which we pray for one another. In the ways in which we take care of those who are disadvantaged. The way we reach out to the poor and to those who are in need. By the ways in which we pray for the needs of the world. How important that is. The kingdom of God is at hand. And it is our responsibility as disciples to bring that message alive, to show people through our own lives and our actions that Jesus is alive in the world, alive in our hearts. And to go out and to proclaim that not just by what we say, by what we do.

Let’s now profess what it is that we believe. I believe in one God. God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, conssubstantial with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit was born of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontious Pilot. He suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in fulfillment of the scriptures. He ascended into he and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. And of his kingdom there will be no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and Son, the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one holy, Catholic, and apostolic church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, the life of the world to come. Amen. Let us take this opportunity now as we place our prayers, our needs, our hopes and dreams for the world and for one another into the hands of God. Our response to each prayer will be Lord here our prayer. For church leaders, may they bring healing to those in need. We pray to the Lord. Lord, here our pray. For government leaders, may they continue to work toward world peace. We pray to the Lord. Lord, here our pray. For the youth of Mercy Home, may they successfully complete their academic year. We pray to the Lord. Lord, here our pray for those who mourn. May their hearts be comforted by the Lord’s presence in their lives. We pray to the Lord. Lord, here our pray. Gracious and loving God, we trust and know that you hear all of our prayers. The prayers we pray out loud and certainly those many prayers that we carry in the quiet of our hearts. Give us the grace and the strength, the patience, the courage to be signs of your love in this world to truly be disciples through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Check

this out. It’s kind of Jesus Christ.

[music] Pray my friends, my sisters, my brothers that this our sacrifice may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church. Oh God, who in the offerings presented here provide for the twofold needs of human nature, nourishing us with food and renewing us with your sacrament. Grant we pray that the sustenance they provide may not fail us in body or in spirit. through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord is with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just. It is truly right and just, our duty and salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father most holy, through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your word, through whom you made all things, whom you sent as our savior and redeemer, incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, fulfilling your will, gaining for you a holy people, he stretched out his hands as he endured his passion, so as to break the bonds of death and to manifest the resurrection. And so with the angels, with all the saints, we declare your glory as with one voice we acclaim.

Holy, [singing] holy, holy Lord God of host. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosana [singing] in the highest. Blessed [music] is he who comes in the [singing] name of the Lord. Hosana in the highest.

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the font of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dwfalls so that they become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time that he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks, he broke it. He gave it to his disciples saying, “Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.

In a similar way, when the supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples saying, “Take this all of you and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and the eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

The mystery of faith. When we eat [music] this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim [singing] your death, O Lord, until you come [singing and music] again. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and his resurrection, we offer to you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you’ve held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity. Together with Leo, our pope, Bla1, our bishop, and with all your faithfilled people. Remember also our sisters and our brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all of those who have died in your mercy. welcome them into the light of your presence. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of God, with her blessed spouse, Joseph, with the blessed apostles and the martyrs, with all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, that we may merit to be co-airs to eternal life and may give you praise and glorify you through your son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God, almighty father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.

Amen. Amen. [singing] Amen.

And Jesus gathered his disciples and he taught them how to pray. Our father who art in heaven, be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil and graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy, we may be freed from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope, the coming of our savior Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to his apostles, “Peace I leave you. It’s my peace that I give to you. look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the risen Lord be with each of you. And with your spirit. Share now the Lord’s peace. And for those of you who are celebrating this eukarist with us here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, we offer and we pray that you receive God’s choices, blessings in life in the peace of Christ.

Lamb of God, you take away [singing and music] the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of [singing] God, [music] you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, [singing]

you take away the sins [music] of the world, grant us peace.

My friends, behold Jesus, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, the bread of life that comes down from heaven. Blessed are those invited to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Hallelu. [singing] [music] Hallelu. Hallelu.

Hallelu. [music]

Halleluah. [singing] Hallelu.

The kingom [singing] of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the [music and singing] gospel. Hallelu. Hallelu. [music]

Hallelu. [singing]
