Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Homily Transcript
This lady’s doing a survey.
She goes up to an older man and says,
“I’m doing a survey, can I ask you a question?”
The little guy said, “sure.”
The woman said, “if you were on a crowded bus
And seated, and a woman came on the bus,
Would you give her your seat?”
He said, “no.”
And she said, “if it was an elderly woman.
Would you give her your seat?”
And he said, “no, I wouldn’t.”
She said, “if it was a younger, pregnant woman,
Would you give her your seat?”
And he said, “no, I wouldn’t.”
She said, “you selfish, conceited human being.
Why wouldn’t you have given any of those women your seat?”
And he said, “because-
I’m the bus driver.”
[Laughter]
Oh, I crack myself up.
In life, do we sometimes miss the whole point?
For example, the future father-in -law
Asked his future son-in-law,
“Young man, can you support a family?”
The surprise groomed to be replied, “well, no, sir.
I was just planning to support your daughter.
The rest of you have to fend for yourselves.”
[Laughter]
There’s an old saying that goes like this,
“What’s mine is mine, and I’ll keep it.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll take some of yours.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll share it.”
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll keep it.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll take some of yours.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll share it.
We listened in Paul’s letter to the Colossians,
“Think of what is above, not what is of earth.”
Again, today’s gospel from St. Luke,
Jesus says, “one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Know this.
“Where our treasure is, there will our heart also be.”
Where our treasure is, there will our heart also be.
Someone said, “there are three kind of givers,
Grudge givers, duty givers, and thanks givers.
Grudge givers say, “I have to give.”
Duty givers say, “I ought to give.”
And thanks givers say, “I want to give.”
It’s not only about thanks giving.
It’s also about thanks living.
Where do we put our trust?
What motivates our life’s decisions?
Is it power?
Success by worldly standards?
Wealth?
The gospel of Jesus?
Always knowing that our decisions have consequences.
Our actions and decisions will define our very lives.
And decisions shape our lives and give them meaning.
In life, what are we looking for?
In life, what are we finding?
There are so many people today
Trying to find happiness out there someplace.
Happiness is not something we get, rather something we do.
And most importantly, happiness is an inside job.
Think about this.
Our being here on earth is God’s gift to us.
What we do with our life is our gift back to God.
Our being here on earth is God’s gift
To each and every one of us.
What we do with our life is our gift back to God.
Fear not that your life shall someday come to an end.
Rather, fear you’ll never have a beginning.
