If you remember this song, join in …
(singing)
Good job!
You might remember that was back in 1965 when it came out. I believe the music was Burt Bacharach and the words were by Al Davis. I couldn’t help but to think of that song after reading the scriptures for today’s liturgy.
Jesus is challenged by the religious leaders, “Tell us which of the 613 commandments or laws” … that they were supposed to follow … “which one of those is the most important?” Jesus answers simply, “Love.” Love has to be the spirit behind any of the laws or commandments.
Today, as we are fed by the word of God in scripture and Jesus present to us in the Eucharist, we are challenged to remember where do we need to expand in our own minds, and our hearts, and our souls, this idea of love? Who we love. How we love. What attitudes, what actions in our own lives are challenged by the simple command, love God and love your neighbor? Jesus is really clear, you can’t have one without the other.
My friends, as we celebrate today’s Eucharist, let’s remember God’s challenge to each of us to expand that idea, that notion of love in our own minds, and our words, and our actions, and how we love God and one another.
