As reported in DNA Info Chicago, Mercy Home President and CEO Fr. Scott Donahue will address the graduates of St. Xavier University’s schools of Nursing and Education on May 7. At the commencement ceremony, he will be awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

In February, The university’s trustees unanimously voted to award Fr. Donahue with the honorary degree in recognition of his work with underserved children over three decades, especially his commitment to providing them with a life-changing education.

“I am honored by the opportunity to congratulate the graduates as they go forward into the world to bring healing and light to others,” Fr. Donahue said. “I commend St. Xavier University for its commitment and its record of accomplishment in developing the gifts of those who aspire to share them with others.”

Founded in 1846 by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Xavier University is the oldest Catholic institution of higher education in Chicago. Its founding mission was to serve women and the poor. Today, it serves both women and men through 68 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Its central campus is located on Chicago’s Southwest Side, and it serves students at additional locations in suburban Orland Park and in Arizona.
