Finding Grace in an Unfair World

Life is not fair. It’s one of the hardest lessons for many of us to learn and accept. There is a great deal in life that is out of our control. We must learn to make the most of the circumstances we find ourselves in. As Christians, we are asked to follow Jesus’s example so that one day we may enter the kingdom of heaven.

In my work at Mercy Home, I have become more aware of the challenges that some people face—challenges that often seem unfair, especially when they involve children. When I meet with our young people, so many of them express gratitude for having a place like Mercy Home. They are grateful to have a safe place to call home, with a warm bed to sleep in each night, regular meals, and the opportunity to receive a good education.

The life our young people have at Mercy Home is quite a contrast from the difficult home lives many of our kids come from. They have dealt with abuse, neglect, poverty, and violence in their neighborhoods. Sometimes their parents are too caught up in their own struggles to properly care for their children. Yet, despite the difficult circumstances our kids find themselves in, they are still seeking a brighter future. They are a wonderful example of how it is up to each one of us, no matter what life brings, to find the right path and follow Jesus.

The Gospel passage from the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time brings to mind how, even when life seems unfair, God puts us on a level playing field. Like God, the landowner in the Gospel treats all the laborers in the vineyard both fairly and generously. The landowner is kind to all his workers, no matter the time of day they begin their work. In the same way, it does not matter who follows Jesus first. Rather, what matters is that we follow Jesus’s example with our whole self. How fortunate we are that God treats us so well, better than we deserve. Even when we fail, he is patient with us. Let us thank God for the generosity and love that is extended to each of us.

Throughout the month of September, may we all be grateful for God’s generosity to us. It is so great and bountiful that each of us, no matter who comes first to work in the vineyard and follows Jesus’s Gospel message, will inherit the kingdom. I pray that we might remain mindful that while each of us faces our own unique circumstances and challenges, Jesus welcomes us all into the kingdom with open arms. I encourage you to have the same welcoming spirit toward others and truly live his example.
