Of Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago.
Good morning and welcome
To Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Today we celebrate the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.
My name is Dan Riley.
I am joined by Tom McNamara and Maudette Carr,
And our Celebrant is Father Carl Morello.
∫ The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns ∫
∫ And Light Triumphant Breaks. ∫
∫ When Beauty Gilds the Eastern Hills ∫
∫ And Life to Joy Awakes. ∫
∫ Not as of old a little Child to suffer and to die. ∫
∫ But crowned with Glory like the Sun ∫
∫ That lights the morning sky. ∫
In the Name of the Father,
And of the Son,
And of the Holy Spirit.
-Amen.
The Grace, the Peace, the Love of God be with each of you.
-And with your Spirit.
Trusting always in God’s Mercy and Love for us,
We call to mind our sins.
Lord Jesus, You came to reconcile us
To one another and to the Father.
Lord, have mercy.
-Lord, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, You heal the wounds of sin and division.
Christ, have mercy.
-Christ, have mercy.
And Lord Jesus, You intercede for us with Your Father.
-Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
And may Almighty God who loves us
Have mercy on us, forgive us our sins,
And one day bring us to what the Eucharist points toward—
The Banquet of Everlasting Life.
-Amen.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Glory to God in the Highest, ∫
∫ And on Earth peace to people of Good Will. ∫
∫ Glory to God in the Highest, ∫
∫ and on earth peace to people of good will. ∫
∫ [Piano music] ∫
Let us pray.
Grant us, we pray, O Lord, our God,
The constant gladness of being devoted to You.
For it is full and lasting happiness to serve
With constancy the Author of all that is good.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God forever and ever.
-Amen.
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Malachi.
Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven,
When all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble,
And the day that is coming will set them on fire,
Leaving them neither root nor branch,
Says the Lord of Hosts.
But for you who fear My Name,
There will arise the Sun of Justice
With its healing rays.
The Word of the Lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ The Lord comes to rule the earth, ∫
∫ To rule with justice. ∫
∫ The Lord comes to rule the earth, ∫
∫ To rule with justice. ∫
∫ Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, ∫
∫ With the harp and the sound of song. ∫
∫ With trumpets and the sound of the horn, ∫
∫ Raise a shout before the King, the Lord. ∫
∫ The Lord comes to rule the earth, ∫
∫ To rule with justice. ∫
A reading from the Second Letter of St. Paul
To the Thessalonians.
Brothers and sisters,
You know how one must imitate us,
For we did not act in a disorderly way among you,
Nor did we eat food received free from anyone.
On the contrary, in toil and drudgery,
Night and day,
We worked so as not to burden any of you.
Not that we do not have the right,
Rather, we wanted to present ourselves
As a model for you so that you might imitate us.
In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone…

Was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.
We hear that some are conducting themselves
Among you in a disorderly way,
By not keeping busy but minding the business of others.
Such people we instruct and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ
To work quietly and to eat their own food.
The Word of the Lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫
∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫
∫ Stand erect and raise your heads, ∫
∫ Because your redemption is at hand. ∫
∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫
Brothers and sisters in faith, the Lord be with you.
-And with your Spirit.
Ours is a reading now from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
-Glory to You, O Lord.
While some people were speaking about how the Temple was adorned
With costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said,
“All that you see here— the days will come
When there will not be left a stone upon another stone
That will not be thrown down.”
Then they asked Him, “Teacher, when will this happen?
And what sign will there be
When all these things are about to happen?”
He answered, “See that you not be deceived,
For many will come in My Name,
Saying, ‘I am He,’ and ‘The time has come.’
Do not follow them.
When you hear of wars and insurrections,
Do not be terrified, for such things must happen first,
But it will not immediately be the end.”
Then He said to them,
“Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be powerful earthquakes, famines,
And plagues from place to place,
And awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.
Before all this happens, however,
They will seize and persecute you.
They will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,
And they will have you led before kings
And governors because of My Name.
It will lead to your giving testimony.
Remember, you are not to prepare your own defense beforehand,
For I Myself will give you a wisdom in speaking
That all your adversaries will be powerless
To resist or refute.
You will even be handed over by parents, brothers,
Relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
You will be hated by all because of My Name,
But not a hair on your head will be destroyed.
By your perseverance, you will secure your lives.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
-Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
So, have you ever had anything explode in your microwave?
Well, one time I was starving, so to speak,
And I threw a frozen burrito into my microwave,
And I hit a few buttons, and then I walked away.
And I came back minutes later
To what looked like a crime scene inside my microwave.
The burrito erupted like a volcano,
And there were beans on the wall
And cheese on the top of the machine.
It looked like a disaster.
So, the burrito looked so calm and peaceful going in,
But inside the pressure was building,
And it couldn’t handle the heat, I suppose.
So, why am I talking about my burrito experience?
Well, in today’s Gospel, Jesus is warning His disciples
That pressure is coming.
That’s what He’s telling them.
The pressure is going to be coming.
And things might look peaceful now.
The Temple may look strong, impressive, and immovable,
But it’s not going to last forever.
Chaos, He tells them, is coming.
Not just in the world, but even closer to home.
Friends will betray each other.
Families will be divided.
People will hate you because of your faith.
And that’s the microwave moment.
But Jesus doesn’t tell us to panic.
He tells us this to help prepare us.
He’s saying, “Don’t be surprised when life gets messy.
Don’t lose heart when the heat is on.
By your perseverance, you will preserve your lives.”
He’s calling us not to explode, if you will,
Under pressure, but to endure through it.
You see, God isn’t interested in keeping
Our lives looking clean and perfect on the outside.
What He’s doing is working with us on the inside,
Building strength and patience and courage
And deep faith that lasts when things get rough.
So next time you feel like your life is starting to heat up,
When people don’t understand you or your beliefs,
Or whenever you feel some kind of pressure
Is building around you,
Remember, you’re not in the microwave,
So to speak, alone.
Jesus is right there with you.
That trust and perseverance
Is the key to standing firm in Christ.
We all go through those moments
When the temples, if you will, of our lives—our health,
Our relationships, our plans—these temples start to crumble.
But Jesus is really clear: “Don’t be afraid.
I am still here. Stay with Me. Keep going.”
Friends, that’s the Good News in today’s Gospel.
When our lives—when the world—shakes around us,
Stand firm with Christ,
Because He will walk with us and stand firm with us.
Trusting in that presence of Jesus always with us,
Let us profess the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of Heaven and Earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into Hell,
And on the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into Heaven
And is seated at the right hand of God,
The Father Almighty.
From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints,
The forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting.
Amen.
And now, standing firm with Christ,
With our many needs, we bring them before God.
Our response to each prayer will be:
“Lord, hear our prayer.”
For the Holy Father and members of the Clergy,
May they continue to be a light of hope for others
Throughout the world.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For those serving our country abroad,
May they return home
Safely to their families and friends.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For the youth of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
May the Holy Spirit guide them
As they continue their journey of healing.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For those who are struggling in life,
May they find strength and peace
Through the Lord’s unconditional love and kindness.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
Loving God, we trust that Your Son, Jesus,
Is always walking with us.
And so we bring You these prayers
As we pray in His Name, Christ our Lord.
Amen.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
Blessed are You, Lord, God of all creation.
Through Your goodness we have this bread to offer,
Which earth has given and human hands have made;
May it become for us the Bread of Life.
Blessed be God forever.
∫ [Piano music continues] ∫
Through the mingling of this water and wine,
We share the divinity of Christ,
Who humbled Himself to share our humanity.
Blessed are You, Lord, God of all creation,
For through Your goodness we have wine to offer.
Fruit of the vine, work of human hands,
May it become our spiritual drink.
Blessed be God forever.
Lord, wash away my iniquities and cleanse me of all sin.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
Friends, pray with me now that the gifts
Of bread and wine offered be acceptable
To our Almighty and loving God.
-May the Lord accept the sacrifice at our hands
For the praise and Glory of God’s Name,
For our good and the good of all God’s Holy Church.
Grant, O Lord, we pray, that what we offer
In the sight of Your Majesty may obtain for us
The Grace of being devoted to You and gain us the prize
Of Everlasting Happiness
Through Christ our Lord.
-Amen.
The Lord be with you.
-And with your Spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
-We lift them up to the Lord.
And let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
-It is right and just.
It is right and just,
Our duty and our salvation,
Always and everywhere to give You thanks,
Lord, Almighty and Eternal God.
For You laid the foundation of the world
And have arranged the changing of times and seasons.
You formed man in Your own image
And set humanity over the whole world
In its wonder to rule in Your Name
Over all You have made and forever praise You
In Your mighty works through Christ our Lord.
Now with all the Angels we praise You
As in joyful celebration we acclaim:
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts. ∫
∫ Heaven and earth are full of Your Glory. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the Highest. ∫
∫ Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the Highest. ∫
You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the Fount of all Holiness.
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,
By sending down Your Spirit upon them like the dewfall
So that they may become for us
The Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time He was betrayed
And entered willingly into His Passion,
He took bread, and giving thanks, broke it.
He gave it to the Disciples, saying,
“Take this, all of you, and eat of it.
This is My Body, which will be given up for you.”
In a similar way, when the supper ended,
He took the chalice, once more giving thanks,
Gave it to the Disciples, saying,
“Take this, all of you, and drink from it.
For this is the Chalice of My Blood,
The Blood of the new and eternal Covenant.
It will be poured out for you and for many
For the forgiveness of sin;
Do this in memory of Me.”
The Mystery of our Faith.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup; ∫
∫ We proclaim Your Death, O Lord, ∫
∫ Until You come again. ∫
As we celebrate now the Memorial of His Death and Resurrection,
We offer You, Lord, the Bread of Life,
The Chalice of Salvation,
Giving thanks that You have held us worthy
To be in Your presence and minister to You.
Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
We may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, Your Church spread throughout the world
And bring her to the fullness of Charity,
Together with our Holy Father,
With Archbishop Blase Cupich,
And all the Clergy and Religious.
Remember all our brothers and sisters,
Those who have fallen asleep in the hope of the Resurrection,
And those who have died in Your Mercy.
Welcome them into the Light of Your Face.
Have Mercy on us all, we pray,
That with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
With Joseph, her spouse,
With all the Saints and the Apostles
Who have pleased You throughout the ages,
We may merit to be coheirs to Eternal Life
And one day praise and glorify You
Through Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through Him, with Him, and in Him;
O God, Almighty Father,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All Glory and Honor are Yours forever and ever.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Amen. Amen. Amen. ∫
And now with confidence, we pray
As Jesus taught the first disciples:
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done,
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray,
From every evil;
Graciously grant peace this day by the help of Your Mercy.
May we be free from sin and safe from all distress
As we await the Blessed Hope
And the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
For the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory are Yours,
Now and forever.
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to Your Apostles,
“Peace I leave you, My peace I give you.”
Look not on our sins but on the faith of Your Church,
And graciously grant her peace and unity
In accordance with Your will,
Who live and reign forever and ever.
-Amen.
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
-And with your Spirit.
Let us offer each other some gesture of peace.
From all of us here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
To all of you folks watching at home,
We extend the Love and the Peace of Christ.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world: ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world: ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world: ∫
∫ Grant us peace. ∫

We behold, in faith, Jesus,
The One who takes away our sin and the sin of the world.
Strengthened are we, called to the Supper of the Lamb.
Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof,
But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
May the Body of Christ, may the Blood of Christ,
Keep us safe for Everlasting Life.
-Amen.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
For those of you at home, please turn to page six
In your TV Mass guide and join in singing
Our Communion song, “May the Road Rise to Meet You.”
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ May the road rise to meet you. ∫
∫ May the wind be at your back. ∫
∫ May the sun shine warm upon your face. ∫
∫ May the rain fall softly on your fields, ∫
∫ And until we meet again, ∫
∫ May you keep safe in the gentle, loving arms of God. ∫
∫ For everything there is a season: ∫
∫ A time for meeting, a time to say goodbye. ∫
∫ In all things, God is near, always guiding your way. ∫
Please join me now in the prayer
For the children of Mercy Home.
Our Lady of Mercy,
We pray that You will guide, protect, and bless
All boys and girls who this day have a home called Mercy.
May they find the Father’s Mercy
As we offer them our hearts
In the Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
May they see God’s Mercy in action
Through our love, prayers, and sacrifices.
Let us pray.
We have partaken of the gifts
Of this Sacred Mystery, humbly imploring You, O Lord,
That what Your Son commanded us to do in memory of Him
May bring us growth in charity through Christ our Lord.
-Amen.
Let us bow our heads now and ask God’s blessing.
Creator God, as we go into the week ahead,
There will be many pressures—some expected, some unexpected.
But help us to remember always to have faith and courage
That Your Son walks with us, strengthening us.
We ask this blessing as we go forward
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
-Amen.
We go in peace now to love and serve God
By our care for one another.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Come, you thankful people, come; ∫
∫ Raise the song of harvest home. ∫
∫ All is safely gathered in ere the winter storms begin. ∫
∫ God our Maker does provide for our wants to be supplied. ∫
∫ Come to God’s own Temple, come. ∫
∫ Raise the song of harvest… ∫
Hello, my friends.
As you know—as I know—
This TV ministry at Mercy Home is so important.
It allows us to gather wherever you may be
To participate in the prayer of the Church.
It allows us to pray for one another—and how important it is.
It allows you and me to pray for the children
Here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
We’re nourished by our presence together
And by the celebration of the Eucharist.
I just want to take this opportunity
To thank you so very much for the ways in which you
Support this Mass here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Please consider doing that going forward as well.
May God bless you and your family and your friends
For all you do for the TV Mass
At Mercy Home—and for our children.

We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For those who are struggling in life,
May they find strength and peace
Through the Lord’s unconditional love and kindness.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
Loving God, we trust that Your Son, Jesus,
Is always walking with us.
And so we bring You these prayers
As we pray in His Name, Christ our Lord.
Amen.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
Blessed are You, Lord, God of all creation.
Through Your goodness we have this bread to offer,
Which earth has given and human hands have made;
May it become for us the Bread of Life.
It will be poured out for you and for many
For the forgiveness of sin;
Through Him, with Him, and in Him;
O God, Almighty Father,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All Glory and Honor are Yours forever and ever.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Amen. Amen. Amen. ∫
And now with confidence, we pray
As Jesus taught the first disciples:
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done,
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray,
From every evil;

∫ You take away the sins of the world: ∫

We behold, in faith, Jesus,
The One who takes away our sin and the sin of the world.
Strengthened are we, called to the Supper of the Lamb.
Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof,
But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
May the Body of Christ, may the Blood of Christ,
Keep us safe for Everlasting Life.
-Amen.

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Homily Transcript

∫ [Piano music] ∫
The following presentation is made possible
By the generosity of the viewers

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Homily Transcript
