Good morning and welcome
To Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday.
My name is Dan Riley.
I am joined by Tom McNamara and David Ryan
And our celebrant is Father Greg Sakowitz,

∫ Come Holy Ghost, Creator blessed, ∫
∫ and in our hearts take up Thy rest. ∫

∫ to fill the hearts which Thou hast made, ∫
∫ to fill the hearts which Thou hast made. ∫

Good morning and welcome to celebrate Pentecost Sunday.
We begin our prayers, as we begin all things
In the name of the Father and of the Son
And of the Holy Spirit.

-Amen.

The Lord be with you.
-and with your spirit.

Our God is loving, compassionate, and always forgiving.
We are sinners who take a moment of silence
And ask forgiveness and the Lord’s mercy.

Lord have mercy.
-Lord have mercy.

Christ have mercy.
-Christ have mercy.

Lord have mercy.
-Lord have mercy.

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
Forgive us our sins,
And bring us to everlasting life.

-Amen.

As God’s forgiven family we sing praise to our God.

∫ [Music] ∫

∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫
∫ and on earth peace to people of goodwill. ∫
∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫
∫ and on earth peace to people of goodwill. ∫

And together let us pray for the grace
To follow Christ more closely.

Loving God, by the mystery of today’s great feast,
Sanctify Your whole Church in every people and nation.

Pour out, we pray, the gifts of the Holy Spirit
Across the face of the earth,
And with the divine grace that was at work,
The Gospel was first proclaimed.
It will now more than ever, the hearts of believers,
Through Christ our Lord.

-Amen.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
They were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise
Like a strong driving wind,
And it filled the entire house in which they were in.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
Which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
And began to speak in different tongues,
As the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven
Staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound they gathered in a large crowd,
But they were confused because each one heard them
Speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,
“Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them

In our native language?
We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites,
Inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus,
And Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt,
And the districts of Libya near Cyrene,
As well as travelers from Rome,
Both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans, and Arabs.
Yet we hear them speaking in our own language
Of the mighty acts of God.”
The Word of the Lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Music] ∫
∫ Lord, send out Your Spirit ∫
∫ and renew the face of the earth. ∫
∫ Lord, send out Your Spirit ∫
∫ and renew the face of the earth. ∫
∫ Bless the Lord, O my soul. ∫
∫ O Lord, my God, how great You are. ∫
∫ How many are Your works, O Lord? ∫
∫ The earth is full of Your creatures. ∫
∫ Lord, send out Your Spirit ∫
∫ and renew the face of the earth. ∫
A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters, no one can say Jesus is Lord
Except by the Holy Spirit.
There are different kinds of spiritual gifts,
But the same Spirit.
There are different forms of service, but the same Lord.
There are different workings, but the same God
Who produces them in all of us and everyone.
To each individual, the manifestation of the Spirit
Is given for some benefit.
As a body is one, though it has many parts,
And all the parts of the body, though many,
Are one body, so also is Christ.
For in one Spirit, we were all Baptized into one body,
Whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,
And we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
The Word of the Lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Music] ∫
∫ Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia ∫
∫ Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia ∫
∫ Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful ∫
∫ And kindle in them the fire of Your love ∫

∫ Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia ∫
∫ Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia ∫
The Lord be with you.
-And with your Spirit.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
-Glory to you, O Lord.
On the evening of that first day of the week,
When the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
For fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst.
And He said to them, “Peace be with you.”
When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said again, “Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
When He had said this, He breathed on them
And said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit,
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
Whose sins you retain shall be retained.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
-Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Little five-year-old Johnny swallowed a quarter.
Mom said to the dad, “Quick called the paramedics,
Johnny swallowed a quarter.”
And dad said, “I’m gonna give our Pastor a call.
He can get the money outta anybody.”
[Laughter]
I like that one.
Pentecost is that Feast that celebrates the day
In our Church’s history when unity and courage
Triumphs over fear, division, and feeling lost.
What do we mean by the Holy Spirit?
The best definition is this.
The Holy Spirit is a mysterious, active presence of God
Within each one of us.
The Holy Spirit is a mysterious, active presence of God
Within each one of us.
The Lord is with us.
God bends to touch us first.
God runs after us.
The Holy Spirit whom Jesus had promised
To send to His disciples, descended upon them on Pentecost
And transformed them.
But changed them into what?
This confused and fearful group was changed
Into a courageous body of Christian believers.
They believed again after doubting.
They hoped again after despairing.
They loved again after faltering.
You know, we all of us, we live in very tough times.
Never quit, never ever give up.
The Spirit of the Lord is with us
As our strength, hope, and courage.
May the Spirit of God lend us to the following three R’s.
Respect for self, respect for others,
And responsibility for all our actions.
The three important R’s.
Respect for self, respect for others,
And responsibility for all our actions.
Father James Keller, founder of the Christophers,
Makes this point:
It is better to be optimistic than pessimistic.
And speaking of negativity, some parishes ago,
A woman in my Parish, who was always, always,
Always negative, always complained,
Didn’t suffer from depression, always negative.
The phone rang with her, it was some complaint.
So one day it was the end of June, perfect Sunday,
75 degrees, no rain, no clouds, no wind, perfect Sunday day.
I said, if I see her at Mass,
I’m gonna get something positive from her today.
Sure enough, she was at Mass
At the beautiful end of June, Sunday day.
After Mass I saw her, I said, “Well, good morning.”
I said, “Isn’t today just a beautiful, perfect day?”
And she said, “They’re talking rain tomorrow.”
I almost died.
I said, “So at least I hope you own an umbrella.”
And I kind of walked away.
We know people who are always so negative,
Who are sometimes toxic.
Our attitude plays such an important point
And role in life, with the help and grace of God.
Please know Jesus loves us just the way we are.
And the Lord Jesus loves us too much to leave us that way.
That Jesus loves us just the way we are.
And the Lord Jesus loves us too much to leave us that way.
So with the help of God, and by the power of the Holy Spirit,
Find the greatness within you and live it.
Find the greatness within you and live it.
And always live for others.

And together, we profess our one faith:
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
Of all things visible and invisible.
I believe one Lord Jesus Christ,
The only begotten Son of God,
Born of the Father before all ages,
God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God,
Begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father,
Through Him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven.
By the Holy Spirit,
Was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
He suffered death and was buried,
And rose again on the third day,
In accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven,
Seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty,
Who come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And His kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
Who the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
Who has spoken through the Prophets.
I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism, for the forgiveness of sins,
Look forward to the Resurrection of the dead,
And life of the world to come.
Amen.
With confidence, faith, and joy,
We bring the Lord our needs, our prayers, our very lives.
Our response to each prayer is,
‘Lord, hear our prayer.’
For our Holy Father and Church leaders,
May they be filled with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit,
As they proclaim the Gospel to all people.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For peace in our world and an end to violence,
May the Holy Spirit transform the world
Into a global community filled with love.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For the youth of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
May the Holy Spirit’s presence in their lives
Give them courage as they continue
Their process of healing.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For those we remember today on Memorial Day,
For those who protect our country,
May the Risen Christ’s light shine upon them
And their loved ones.
We pray to the Lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
Loving God, we ask you to hear our prayers,
Always made known through Christ our Lord.
-Amen.
∫ [Music] ∫
∫ [Music continues] ∫
And pray, my sisters and brothers,
That our sacrifice be acceptable to God,
The Father, the Almighty.
-May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands.
For the praise and glory His name,
For our good and the good of all His Holy Church.
Amen.
Grant, we pray, O Lord, that as promised by Your Son,
The Holy Spirit may reveal to us more abundantly
The hidden mystery of this sacrifice
And lead us all into truth through Christ our Lord.
-Amen.
The Lord be with you.
-And with your Spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
-We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to Lord our God.
-It is right and just.
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
Always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and eternal God,
For bringing your Paschal Mystery to completion,
You bestow the Holy Spirit today on those
Who made your adopted children,
By uniting them to your only begotten Son.
The same Spirit as the Church came to birth,
Open for all people, knowledge of God,
And brought together the many languages of the earth
In profession of one Faith.
Therefore, overcome with Paschal joy,

We, together sing our hymn of praise:
∫ [Music] ∫
∫ Holy, Holy, Holy. ∫
∫ Lord God of Hosts. ∫
∫ Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
∫ Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.
Make holy therefore these gifts we pray,
By sending down Your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
That they may become for us the Body and Blood
Of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time was betrayed and entered into His passion.
Jesus took bread and giving thanks, broke it,
And gave the disciples saying,
“Take this, all of you, and eat of it,
For this is My Body, which will be given up for you.”
When supper was ended, He took the Chalice,
And once more giving thanks, gave to the disciples saying,
“Take this, all of you, and drink from it,
For this is the Chalice of My Blood,
The Blood of the new and eternal Covenant,
Which will be poured out for you and for many
For the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of Me.”
The Mystery of Faith.
∫ [Music] ∫
∫ When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, ∫
∫ We proclaim Your death, O Lord. ∫
∫ Until You come again. ∫
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of His life,
Death, Resurrection, we offer You, Lord,
The Bread of Life and the Chalice of Salvation,
Giving thanks that You have held us worthy
To be in Your presence and minister to You.
Humbly we pray, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
Gathered into one by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, Your Church, spread throughout the world,
And bring her to the fullness of charity
Together with Leo our Pope, Blas… our Bishop,
The Bishops, Clergy, religious brothers and sisters,
And all who serve in Your faith communities.
Remember also our brothers and sisters
Who have fallen asleep in the hope of the Resurrection,
And all who have died in Your mercy.
Welcome them into the light of Your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
With the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
Blessed Joseph her spouse, the Blessed Apostles,
And all the Saints who have pleased You throughout the ages.
Therefore to be co-heirs to eternal life.
May praise and glorify You
Through Your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Through Him, with Him and in Him;
O God, Almighty Father,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All glory and honor is Yours forever and ever.
∫ [Music] ∫
∫ Amen, Amen, Amen. ∫
With confidence, faith, and joy,
For the Holy Spirit is always with us,
With one voice we pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
Grant peace in our days,
That by the help of Your mercy,
We may be always free from sin, and safe from all distress,
And we await the blessed hope,
And the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
-For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours,
Now and forever.
And Lord Jesus Christ, Your said to Your Apostles,
“Peace I leave you, My peace I give you.”
Look not upon our sins, but on the faith of Your Church,
And grant us peace and unity, in accordance with Your will,
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.
-Amen.
May the peace of the Lord be with all of you.
-And with your Spirit.
Let us all show each other the sign of peace.
For those that are praying,
Maybe at a hospital, nursing home, at home alone,
From all of us here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
To each and every one of you;
God’s blessings, peace, and the Lord’s joy.
∫ [Music] ∫
∫ Lamb of God; ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God; ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God; ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫

Behold the Lamb of God.
Behold Him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the Supper of the Lamb.
-Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof,
But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
∫ [Music] ∫

Through Him, with Him and in Him;
O God, Almighty Father,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All glory and honor is Yours forever and ever.
For those that are praying,
Maybe at a hospital, nursing home, at home alone,
From all of us here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
To each and every one of you;
God’s blessings, peace, and the Lord’s joy.

Pentecost Sunday Homily Transcript

∫ [Music] ∫
The following presentation is made possible
By the generosity of the viewers
Of Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago.

Good morning and welcome
To Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday.
My name is Dan Riley.
I am joined by Tom McNamara and David Ryan
And our celebrant is Father Greg Sakowitz,
Rector of Holy Name Cathedral.

∫ Come Holy Ghost, Creator blessed, ∫
∫ and in our hearts take up Thy rest. ∫
∫ come with Thy grace and heavenly aid, ∫

In which you support the TV Mass here
At Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Let us continue to pray for one another.
Please consider making an offering
So that we can keep the TV Mass on the air.
And may God bless you,
Your family members, and your friends.

Pentecost Sunday Homily Transcript
