On any given Sunday, two‑time Pro Bowler and elite “lockdown” cornerback Jaylon Johnson helps the Chicago Bears live up to their intimidating “Monsters of the Midway” legacy with his sticky, game‑changing coverage. Off the field, Johnson is known for his kindness and character, founding a non‑profit in Fresno, California to honor a late friend and quietly giving back to his community. In December, during the heart of the Bears’ playoff run, Johnson surprised Mercy Home’s youth and staff with an unforgettable guest appearance.
The gathering in our West Loop campus cafeteria kicked off with a hype video of Johnson’s best plays before he entered the room to rapturous applause. Our young people were invited to participate in a Q&A session, where they asked insightful questions about what motivates Johnson, his background, and advice about the future. Johnson gave our kids both thoughtful answers and encouragement to work hard toward their goals.
Following the Q&A session, Johnson invited youth and coworkers to take photos and signed autographs. In addition to posters, he autographed hats, shoes, jerseys, and footballs, and took time to chat with the youth.
Johnson also gave each of our kids a wonderful Christmas present, an Amazon gift card to complete their holiday wish lists. Both our young people and coworkers greatly enjoyed this wonderful opportunity. Judah, a young man living at the Home, said that Johnson was the first professional football player he ever met. Judah and his sister took a photo with Johnson.
Another youth, Julian, also enjoyed the opportunity to have his photo taken with the All-Pro defensive back.
“I was really happy about the gift card,” he added.
We are so thankful to Jaylon Johnson for being so generous with his time and sharing an off day with our young people. He truly provided all of us at Mercy Home with an unforgettable experience in the midst of an unforgettable season.
