Like countless people around the country, our young men and women honored Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of justice and peace by serving others on the federal holiday commemorating the civil rights leader’s birthday. Both Walgreen and Cooke Homes gave back to the community through various service projects.
The young ladies of Walgreen Home partnered with AmeriCorps to help restore and beautify Curie Metropolitan High School on South Archer Ave. Our girls spent the day painting murals on the walls, cleaning the building, and helping with light fixtures and renovating the gym.
Meanwhile, our young men in Cooke Home volunteered with the Forest Preserves of Cook County. They spent the day creating a healthy space and habitat by removing invasive plants and species in the Dan Ryan Woods on the South Side.

To top it off, our boys were able take breaks in the warm pavilion, where they visited workshops to learn more about Martin Luther King Jr., do arts and crafts, and study wild animals and their habitats. Appropriately, the walls of the pavilion where our boys spent their day read, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
We are so proud of our young people for spending their day off giving back to others in need!
