Good morning and welcome
To Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Today we celebrate the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
My name is dan riley,
I am joined by Tom McNamara and Brigid Gerace,
And our celebrant is Father Greg Sakowitz.
∫ For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, ∫
∫ For the love which from our birth over and around us lies. ∫
∫ Lord of all, to you we raise, ∫
∫ This our hymn of grateful praise. ∫
Good morning and welcome as we gather as a family of God.
We begin our prayer as we begin all things
In the name of the father
And of the son,
And the holy spirit.
-Amen.
The lord be with you.
-And with your spirit.
Our God is loving, compassionate and always forgiving.
We are sinners who take a moment of silence
And ask forgiveness and the lord’s mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
-Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
-Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
-Lord, have mercy.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
Forgive us our sins
And bring us to everlasting life.
-Amen.
As God’s forgiven family we sing praise to our God:
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫
∫ And on earth peace to people of good will. ∫
∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫
∫ And on earth peace to people of good will. ∫
And together let us pray for the grace
To follow Christ more closely.
Draw near to your servants, o lord,
And answer our prayers with unceasing kindness.
And for those who glory in you as your creator and guide,
You may restore to us what you have created
And keep safe what you have restored.
Always through Christ our lord.
-Amen.
A reading from the book of Ecclesiastes.
“Vanity of vanities,” says Coheleth.
“Vanity of vanities, all things are vanity.”
Here is one who has labored
With wisdom and knowledge and skill,
And yet to another who has not labored over it,
He must leave property.
This also is vanity and a great misfortune.
But what profit comes to man from all the toil
And anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun?
All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation.
Even at night his mind is not at rest.
This also is vanity.
The word of the lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. ∫
∫ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. ∫
∫ You turn man back to dust and say, ∫
∫ “Return, o children of men.” ∫
∫ To your eyes a thousand years ∫
∫ Are like yesterday come and gone, ∫
∫ Or like a watch in the night. ∫
∫ If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. ∫
A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Colossians.
Brothers and sisters, if you are raised with Christ,
Seek what is above,
Where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.
For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ your life appears,
Then you too will appear with him in glory.
Put to death then the parts of you that are earthly,
Immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire,
And the greed that is idolatry.
Stop lying to one another
Since you have taken off the old self with his practices
And have put on a new self which is being renewed
For knowledge in the image of its creator.
Here there is not Greek and Jew
Circumcision and non-circumcision,
Barbarian, Scythian, slave, free,
But Christ is all and in all.
The word of the lord.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫
∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫
∫ Blessed are the poor in spirit, ∫
∫ For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ∫
∫ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ∫
The lord be with you.
-And with your spirit.
A reading from holy gospel according to Luke.
-Glory to you, o lord.
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,
“Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.”
He replied to him, “friend, who appointed me
As your judge and arbitrator?”
He said to the crowd, “take care to guard
Against all greed, though one may be rich,
One’s life does not consist of possessions.”
He told them this parable, “it was a rich man whose land
Produced a bountiful harvest.”
He asked himself, “what shall I do?
I do not have space to store my harvest.”
He said, “this is what I shall do.
I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones.
There I shall store all my grain and other goods.
I shall say to myself, now, as for you,
You have so many good things stored up for many years.
Rest, eat, drink, and be merry.”
But God said to him, “you fool, this night your life
Will be demanded of you,
And the things that you have prepared,
To whom will they belong?
Thus will be for all who store up treasures for themselves,
But are not rich in what matters to God.”
The gospel of the lord.
-Praise to you, lord Jesus Christ.
This lady’s doing a survey.
She goes up to an older man and says,
“I’m doing a survey, can I ask you a question?”
The little guy said, “sure.”
The woman said, “if you were on a crowded bus
And seated, and a woman came on the bus,
Would you give her your seat?”
He said, “no.”
And she said, “if it was an elderly woman.
Would you give her your seat?”
And he said, “no, I wouldn’t.”
She said, “if it was a younger, pregnant woman,
Would you give her your seat?”
And he said, “no, I wouldn’t.”
She said, “you selfish, conceited human being.
Why wouldn’t you have given any of those women your seat?”
And he said, “because-
I’m the bus driver.”
[Laughter]
Oh, I crack myself up.
In life, do we sometimes miss the whole point?
For example, the future father-in -law
Asked his future son-in-law,
“Young man, can you support a family?”
The surprise groomed to be replied, “well, no, sir.
I was just planning to support your daughter.
The rest of you have to fend for yourselves.”
[Laughter]
There’s an old saying that goes like this,
“What’s mine is mine, and I’ll keep it.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll take some of yours.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll share it.”
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll keep it.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll take some of yours.
What’s mine is mine, and I’ll share it.
We listened in Paul’s letter to the Colossians,
“Think of what is above, not what is of earth.”
Again, today’s gospel from St. Luke,
Jesus says, “one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Know this.
“Where our treasure is, there will our heart also be.”
Where our treasure is, there will our heart also be.
Someone said, “there are three kind of givers,
Grudge givers, duty givers, and thanks givers.
Grudge givers say, “I have to give.”
Duty givers say, “I ought to give.”
And thanks givers say, “I want to give.”
It’s not only about thanks giving.
It’s also about thanks living.
Where do we put our trust?
What motivates our life’s decisions?
Is it power?
Success by worldly standards?
Wealth?
The gospel of Jesus?
Always knowing that our decisions have consequences.
Our actions and decisions will define our very lives.
And decisions shape our lives and give them meaning.
In life, what are we looking for?
In life, what are we finding?
There are so many people today
Trying to find happiness out there someplace.
Happiness is not something we get, rather something we do.
And most importantly, happiness is an inside job.
Think about this.
Our being here on earth is God’s gift to us.
What we do with our life is our gift back to God.
Our being here on earth is God’s gift
To each and every one of us.
What we do with our life is our gift back to God.
Fear not that your life shall someday come to an end.
Rather, fear you’ll never have a beginning.
And together as God’s family, our profession of faith:
I believe in one God,
The father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
Of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one lord, Jesus Christ,
The only begotten son of God,
Born of the father before all ages,
God from God, light from light,
True God from true God, begotten, not made,
Consubstantial with the father,
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven.
And by the holy spirit was incarnate
Of the Virgin Mary and became man.
For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried
And rose again on the third day.
In accordance with the scriptures,
He ascended to heaven
And is seated at the right hand of father,
Who will come again in glory;
To judge the living and the dead.
And his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the holy spirit, the lord, the giver of life,
Who proceeds from the father and the son,
Who with the father and the son is adored and glorified,
Who has spoken to the prophets.
I believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins,
I look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the world to come.
Amen.
With confidence, faith and trust, we bring the lord,
Our needs our prayers, our very lives.
Our response to each prayer will be,
“Lord, hear our prayer.”
For our pope, clergy and all who work to serve God,
We pray to the lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For our families and friends,
May they be safe during the summer travel season.
We pray to the lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For those who pray with us during mass,
May God bless them abundantly.
We pray to the lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
For those who grieve a great loss in their lives,
May our lord’s presence comfort them.
We pray to the lord.
-Lord, hear our prayer.
Loving God, we ask you to hear our prayers,
Those voiced and all our needs and prayers known to you, found deep within our hearts,
Always through Christ our lord.
-Amen.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ [Piano music continues] ∫
And pray, my sisters and brothers,
That our sacrifice might be acceptable to God,
The father, the almighty.
-May the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands,
For the praise and glory of his name,
For our good and good of all his holy church.
Amen.
Sanctify these gifts, o lord, we pray,
And accepting the oblation of the spiritual sacrifice,
Make of us an eternal offering to you,
Always through Christ our lord.
-Amen.
The lord be with you.
-And with your spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
-We lift them up to the lord.
Let us give thanks to the lord our God.
-It is right and just.
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
Always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy father,
Almighty and eternal God.
For in you we live and move and have our being.
And while in this body,
Not only experience the daily effects of your care,
But even now possess the pledge of life eternal,
With all the choirs of angels in heaven,
We proclaim your glory as we then together sing:
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Holy, holy, holy, ∫
∫ Lord, God of hosts, ∫
∫ Heaven and earth are full of your glory. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
∫ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
You are indeed holy, o lord, the fount of all holiness.
Make holy therefore these gifts we pray,
By sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall,
That they may become for us
The body and blood of your son,
Our lord Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed
And entered into his passion,
Jesus took bread and giving thanks, broke it,
And gave to the disciples saying,
“Take this, all of you, and eat of it,
For this is my body, which will be given up for you.”
When supper was ended, he took the chalice,
And once more giving thanks gave to the disciples saying,
“Take this, all of you, and drink from it,
For this is the chalice of my blood,
The blood of the new and eternal covenant,
Which will be poured out for you and for many,
For the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.”
The mystery of faith.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ When we eat this bread and drink this cup, ∫
∫ We proclaim your death, o lord, ∫
∫ Until you come again. ∫
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial
Of his life, death, and resurrection,
We offer you, lord, the bread of life
And the chalice of salvation,
Giving thanks that you’ve held us worthy
To be in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly, we pray, that partaking of the body and blood of Christ
We may be gathered into one by the power of the holy spirit.
Remember, lord, your church, spread throughout the world,
And bring her to the fullness of charity
Together with Leo our pope, Blase our bishop,
With the bishop’s clergy, religious brothers and sisters,
And all who serve in your faith communities.
Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep
In the hope of the resurrection
And all who have died in your mercy.
In a very special way,
All the deceased loved ones who have gone home to God.
Welcome them into light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
With the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God,
With blessed joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles,
And all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,
We merit to be co-heirs to eternal life,
And may praise and glorify you
Through your son, our lord, Jesus Christ.
Through him, with him, and in him,
O God, almighty father,
In the unity of the holy spirit,
All glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Amen, amen, amen. ∫
With confidence, faith, and joy,
Together as God’s family we pray:
Our father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us,
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, lord, we pray, from every evil,
Grant peace in our days,
That by the help of your mercy,
We may be free from sin and safe from all distress,
As we await in blessed hope,
The coming of our savior, Jesus Christ,
-For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
Now and forever.
And lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles,
“Peace I leave you, and peace I give you.”
Look not upon our sins, but on the faith of your church,
And grant us peace, unity,
In accordance with to your word,
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.
-Amen.
May the peace of the lord be with all of you.
-And with your spirit.
Let us share the lord’s peace and joy with those around us,
To those that are praying, wherever you may be,
From all of us here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
To each and every one of you,
God’s blessings, peace, and the lord’s joy.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫
∫ Have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world, ∫
∫ Grant us peace. ∫
Behold the lamb of God,
Behold him who takes away the sins of the world,
Blessed are those called to supper of the lamb.
-Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,
But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
For those of you at home,
Please turn to page six in our tv mass guide
And join in singing our communion song,
“At the table of Jesus.”
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ At the table of Jesus we are nourished and fed ∫
∫ By the blessing come and heaven’s living bread. ∫
∫ At the table of Jesus ∫
∫ Earth and heaven are wed to a hungry world ∫
∫ By our God we are led. ∫
∫ Where love and charity are found, ∫
∫ There God is among us God’s goodness abounds. ∫
∫ As Christ gathers many as one, ∫
∫ Let our hearts be glad and reflect God’s love. ∫
∫ At the table of Jesus we are nourished and fed ∫
∫ By the blessing come and heaven’s living bread. ∫
∫ At the table of Jesus ∫
∫ Earth and heaven are wed to a hungry world ∫
∫ By our God we are led. ∫
And together our prayer for the children of Mercy Home:
Our lady of mercy, we pray
That you will guide, protect, and bless
All boys and girls who this day have a home called mercy.
May they find the father’s mercy,
As we offer them our hearts
In the name of your son, Jesus Christ.
We see God’s mercy in action
Through our love, prayers, and sacrifices.
And together let us pray.
Accompany the lord,
Those you renew with these heavenly gifts,
Never failing care for all of us
Because worthy of eternal redemption
Through Christ our lord.
-Amen.
The lord be with you.
-And with your spirit.
Let us bow our heads and pray for God’s blessings.
May the lord bless you and keep you.
Amen.
May his face shine upon you
And be gracious to you always.
Amen.
May the word of God always stay in our hearts
And share with others in his name.
Amen.
And may the blessing of almighty God;
The father, the son, and the holy spirit
Descend upon all of us
Forever and ever.
-Amen.
Our celebration has ended. We go in peace.
-Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ O God, our help in ages past, ∫
∫ Our hope for years to come. ∫
∫ Our shelter from the stormy blast ∫
∫ And our eternal home. ∫
∫ Before the hills in order stood, ∫
∫ Or earth received its frame. ∫
∫ From everlasting you are God, ∫
∫ To endless years the same. ∫
∫ [Piano music] ∫
∫ [Piano music continues] ∫
Hello, my friends. As you know, as I know,
This tv ministry at Mercy Home is so important.
It allows us to gather wherever you may be
To participate in the prayer of the church.
It allows us to pray for one another
And how important it is.
It allows you and me to pray for the children
Here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
We’re nourished by our presence together
And by the celebration of the eucharist.
I just want to take this opportunity
To thank you so very much for the ways in which you
Support this mass here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Please consider doing that going forward as well.
May God bless you
And your family and your friends for all you do
For the tv mass at Mercy Home
And for our children.

And together our prayer for the children of Mercy Home:
Our lady of mercy, we pray
That you will guide, protect, and bless
All boys and girls who this day have a home called mercy.
May they find the father’s mercy,
As we offer them our hearts
In the name of your son, Jesus Christ.
We see God’s mercy in action
Through our love, prayers, and sacrifices.
And together let us pray.
Accompany the lord,
Those you renew with these heavenly gifts,
Never failing care for all of us
Because worthy of eternal redemption
Through Christ our lord.
-Amen.
The lord be with you.
-And with your spirit.
Let us bow our heads and pray for God’s blessings.
May the lord bless you and keep you.
Amen.
May his face shine upon you
And be gracious to you always.
Amen.
May the word of God always stay in our hearts
And share with others in his name.
Amen.
And may the blessing of almighty God;
The father, the son, and the holy spirit
Descend upon all of us
Forever and ever.
-Amen.
Our celebration has ended. We go in peace.
-Thanks be to God.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Homily Transcript
∫ [Piano music] ∫
The following presentation is made possible
By the generosity of the viewers of
Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago.
And is seated at the right hand of father,
Who will come again in glory;
