The following presentation is made possible
By the generosity of the viewers
Of Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago.
Good morning and welcome
To Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Today, we celebrate the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
My name is Dan Riley,
I’m joined by Tom McNamara and Elizabeth Norton,
And our celebrant is Father Scott Donahue,
President of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
∫ Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, ∫
∫ what God has ready for those who love Him. ∫
∫ Spirit of Love, come give us the mind of Jesus. ∫
∫ teach us the wisdom of God. ∫
We have the privilege of gathering around
The Table of the Lord together to celebrate Eucharist,
Giving thanks and to praise our God together.
We do so in the Name of the Father,
And of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
—Amen.
The grace of Our Lord, Jesus Christ,
And the love of God, and the Communion of the Holy Spirit
Be with each of you.
—And with your spirit.
As we gather, as always, we are invited just to pause
For a moment to acknowledge our faults and our failings,
And to seek God’s merciful and loving forgiveness.
Lord Jesus, we believe that You are the Way
That leads us to the Father.
Lord, have mercy.
—Lord, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, we believe that You are Truth,
And that Your Truth reveals God’s love for us.
Christ, have mercy.
—Christ, have mercy.
And Lord Jesus, we believe that You are Life,
That through Your Life, and Death, and Resurrection,
You have promised us a new life in You.
Lord, have mercy.
—Lord, have mercy.
May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us of our sins,
And bring us to Life everlasting.
—Amen.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫
∫ And on Earth peace to people of good will. ∫
∫ Glory to God in the highest, ∫
∫ and on Earth peace to people of good will. ∫
And my friends, let us pray.
O God, who teach us that You
Abide in hearts that are just and true,
Grant that we may be so fashioned by Your grace
As to become a dwelling pleasing to You.
Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God forever and ever.
—Amen.
The First Reading is a reading from the Book of Sirach.
If you choose, you can keep the Commandments.
They will save you.
If you trust in God, you too shall live.
He has set before you fire and water;
To whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand.
Before man are life and death, good and evil;
Whichever he chooses shall be given him.
Immense is the wisdom of the Lord.
He is mighty in power and all-seeing.
The eyes of God are on those who fear Him.
He understands man’s every deed.
No one does He command to act unjustly;
To none does He give license to sin.
The Word of the Lord.
—Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ Blessed are they who follow the Law of the Lord! ∫
∫ Blessed are they who follow the Law of the Lord! ∫
∫ Blessed are those whose way is blameless, ∫
∫ who walk in the Law of the Lord! ∫
∫ Blessed are those who keep His decrees! ∫
∫ with all their hearts they seek Him. ∫
∫ Blessed are they who follow the Law of the Lord! ∫
The Second Reading is a reading from
The First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters, we speak of wisdom to those
Who are mature, not a wisdom of this age,
Nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away.
Rather, we speak God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden,
Which God predetermined before the ages for our glory,
And which none of the rulers of this age knew.
For if they had known it,
They would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.
But as it is written:
What eye has not seen, nor ear has not heard,
And what has not entered the human heart,
What God has prepared for those who love Him,
This God has revealed to us through the Spirit.
For the Spirit scrutinizes everything,
Even the depths of God.
The Word of the Lord.
—Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ Alleluia, Alleluia. ∫
∫ Alleluia, Alleluia. ∫
∫ Blessed are You, Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth. ∫
∫ You have revealed to little ones ∫
∫ the mysteries of the Kingdom. ∫
∫ Alleluia, Alleluia. ∫
The Lord be with each of you.
—And with your spirit.
Ours is a reading taken
From the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
—Glory to You, O Lord.
Jesus said to His disciples,
“I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses
That of the scribes and the Pharisees,
You will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
You shall not kill, and whoever kills
Will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you, whoever is angry
With a sister or brother will be liable to judgment.
You have heard that it was said,
You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust
Has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Again, you have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
Do not take a false oath,”
But make good to the Lord all that you vow.
But I say to you, do not swear at all,
Not by Heaven, for it is God’s throne,
Nor by Earth, for it is His footstool,
Nor by Jerusalem,
For it is the City of the Great King.
Do not swear by your head,
For you cannot make a single hair white or black.
Let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no.
Anything more is from the Evil One.
The Gospel of the Lord.
—Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
I just want you to spend a minute
And think about who is your favorite Saint.
Who is your favorite Saint?
We all have favorite Saints.
You might have two, you might have three.
So as I ask myself that question,
Saint Ignatius of Loyola comes to mind.
I love his spirituality.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta, by the way in which
She gave such a beautiful example to the poor.
I would say Saint Thérèse in the gentle,
Simple way in which she dedicated
Her entire life to God.
I would say Mother Frances Cabrini.
Do you know that Mother Cabrini used to pray
In this Chapel right here, right now?
We have a beautiful statue of her
To commemorate her visits to come and to pray here.
But one of my favorites is Saint Francis of Assisi.
For whatever reason, his spirituality,
His person has captured my imagination and my heart
And challenges me how to live an even better life.
Integrity of life is so terribly important.
I’m taking kind of the reverse side of what
You just heard in the Gospel.
And I want to present it in a positive way.
And I believe when Jesus was preaching this Gospel,
He was really talking about integrity of life.
We’re all called to live a life of integrity.
And what integrity means for me
Is when everything lines up—what you think, what you say,
What you do—when it’s all in alignment,
Then you have integrity of heart and spirit,
When it all lines up together.
And I think that’s what Jesus is saying
And inviting us to live—lives of integrity.
So Saint Francis of Assisi, again, one of my very favorites,
He has this great saying.
It’s actually one of my favorite sayings.
I’m going to say it twice.
He would often say to his followers:
“Preach the Gospel. Use words if you must.”
“Preach the Gospel. Use words if you must.”
Obviously, his point is that people will hear
The Gospel by watching what you do
Far more than by what you say.
Integrity is an alignment of words and actions
That we’re all called to do and to live
As disciples of the Lord, or in other words,
As the very children of God, His daughters and His sons.
The highest compliment I think that you can give
To a person is to say that their life is lived
With a sense of deep integrity because it all lines up.
It’s all transparent.
People see who you are, the values by which you live,
And in many ways the faith that you believe.
Preach the Gospel, all of us, the best we can.
Use words if we must.
Let’s stand together and profess what it is we believe:
I believe in one God,
The Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth,
Of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
The Only Begotten Son of God,
Born of the Father before all ages,
God from God, Light from Light,
True God from True God,
Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
Through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation He came down from Heaven,
And by the Holy Spirit was Incarnate
Of the Virgin Mary, and became Man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
He suffered death and was buried,
And rose again on the third day
In accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into Heaven
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And His Kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
Who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
Who has spoken through the Prophets.
I believe in one, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins,
And I look forward to the Resurrection of the dead
And the life of the world to come.
Amen.
Let us take this opportunity now,
As we place before the Lord our own hopes, our dreams,
Our desires, our prayers for one another
And for the world in which we live.
Our response to each prayer will be:
“Lord, hear our prayer.”
For our Church leaders, may they help open
The hearts and minds of all who seek the Lord.
We pray to the Lord.
—Lord, hear our prayer.
For those who are grieving,
May they be held gently by family and friends,
And may they find comfort in the Lord’s love.
We pray to the Lord.
—Lord, hear our prayer.
For the youth and families who are in need,
May Mercy Home light their way.
We pray to the Lord.
—Lord, hear our prayer.
For victims of war, hunger, poverty, and oppression,
May they experience peace, freedom,
And the fullness of life.
We pray to the Lord.
—Lord, hear our prayer.
We pray too, in the prayer of the Angels in Heaven,
That there might be peace on Earth,
Goodwill toward all.
We pray to the Lord.
—Lord, hear our prayer.
Gracious, loving God,
We know that You hear all of our prayers.
Help us to be faithful disciples,
Living our lives with a sense of integrity,
Showing compassion and Your mercy to all.
Through Christ our Lord.
—Amen.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ [Piano Music continues] ∫
Pray, my friends, my sisters, my brothers,
That this our sacrifice may be acceptable
To God the Father Almighty.
—May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
For the praise and glory of His Name,
For our good and the good of all His Holy Church.
May this oblation, O Lord, we pray, cleanse and renew us,
And may it become for those who do Your will
The source of eternal reward.
Through Christ our Lord.
—Amen.
The Lord is with you.
—And with your spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
—We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
—It is right and just.
It is truly right and just,
Our duty and our salvation,
Always and everywhere to give You thanks,
Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God,
Through Christ our Lord.
For out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours,
He humbled Himself and was born of the Virgin Mary.
By the Passion of the Cross He freed us from unending death,
And by rising from the dead He has given us life eternal.
And so, with the Angels and the Archangels,
With Thrones and Dominions, and with all the Hosts
And Powers of Heaven, we sing the hymn of Your glory,
As without end we acclaim:
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of Hosts, ∫
∫ Heaven and Earth are full of Your glory. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
∫ Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord. ∫
∫ Hosanna in the highest. ∫
You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,
By sending down Your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
So that they may become for us
The Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
At the time He was betrayed
And entered willingly into His Passion,
He took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,
And gave it to His disciples, saying:
“Take this, all of you, and eat of it,
For this is My Body, which will be given up for you.”
In a similar way, when the supper was ended,
He took the chalice and, once more giving thanks,
He gave it to His disciples, saying:
“Take this, all of you, and drink from it,
For this is the Chalice of My Blood,
The Blood of the new and Eternal Covenant,
Which will be poured out for you and for many
For the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of Me.”
The Mystery of Faith.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, ∫
∫ we proclaim Your Death, O Lord, until You come again. ∫
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial
Of His Death and His Resurrection,
We offer to You, Lord, the Bread of Life
And the Chalice of Salvation,
Giving thanks that You have held us worthy
To be in Your presence and minister to You.
Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
We may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, Your Church, spread throughout the world,
And bring her to the fullness of charity,
Together with Leo our Pope, Blas our Bishop,
And with all Your faith-filled people.
Remember also our sisters and our brothers
Who have fallen asleep in the hope of the Resurrection,
And all who have died in Your mercy.
Welcome them into the light of Your presence.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
That with the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God,
With her Blessed Spouse Joseph, with the Blessed Apostles,
And with the Martyrs, and with all the Saints
Who have pleased You throughout the ages,
That we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life
And may praise and give You glory
Through Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through Him, and with Him, and in Him,
O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All glory and honor is Yours forever and ever.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ Amen, Amen, Amen. ∫
Let us together now pray for the coming of God’s Kingdom,
As Jesus taught us to pray:
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done,
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
And graciously grant peace in our day,
That by the help of Your mercy we may be freed from sin
And safe from all distress,
As we await the Blessed hope
And the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours
Now and forever.
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to Your Apostles,
“Peace I leave you, My peace I give you,”
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of Your Church,
And graciously grant her peace and unity
In accordance with Your will,
Who live and reign forever and ever.
—Amen.
May the peace of the Risen Lord be with each of you.
—And with your spirit.
Share now the Lord’s peace.
And for those of you who are at home
Celebrating this Eucharist with us here
At Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
We pray—and I pray—that you receive God’s choicest
Blessings and the peace of Christ in your lives.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world. ∫
∫ have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world. ∫
∫ have mercy on us. ∫
∫ Lamb of God, ∫
∫ You take away the sins of the world. ∫
∫ grant us peace. ∫
My friends, behold Jesus,
The Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.
The Bread of Life who comes down from Heaven.
Blessed are those called to the Supper of the Lamb.
—Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof,
But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
For those of you at home, please turn to page six
In your TV Mass Guide and join in singing our Communion song,
“There Is a Balm in Gilead.”
∫ There is a balm in Gilead ∫
∫ to make the wounded whole; ∫
∫ there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul. ∫
∫ Sometimes I feel discouraged ∫
∫ and think my work’s in vain; ∫
∫ but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. ∫
∫ There is a balm in Gilead ∫
∫ to make the wounded whole; ∫
∫ There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul. ∫
I invite you to turn to page six of the TV Mass Guide
And please pray with me the prayer that we have
For the children here at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Our Lady of Mercy, we pray that you will guide,
Protect, and bless all boys and girls
Who this day have a home called Mercy.
May they find the Father’s Mercy as we offer them our hearts
In the Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
May they see God’s Mercy in action through our love,
Prayers, and sacrifices.
And we continue our prayer.
Having fed upon these heavenly delights,
We pray, O Lord, that we may always long for the food
By which we truly live.
Through Christ our Lord.
—Amen.
I want to thank all of you, once again,
For the prayers that you offer to this mission
Of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
It’s been around 137 years.
I want to thank you for your prayers
And for your support and all that you do
To bring hope and healing to our children.
I also, at this time, want to thank our TV Mass folks.
We’ve been doing this for so many years
At Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
And I’m very grateful for all that they do for us
So that we can bring you this beautiful Liturgy
Into your homes and into your lives.
So may the many blessings of Almighty God,
The Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
Come upon all of you, your family members, and friends,
And remain with you forever.
—Amen.
Our Mass now is ended. Go in peace.
—Thanks be to God.
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
∫ Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life, ∫
∫ such a way as gives us breath, ∫
∫ such a truth as ends all strife, ∫
∫ such a life as killeth death. ∫
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
My friends, I just want to thank you for the ways
In which you support the TV Mass here
At Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.
Let us continue to pray for one another.
Please consider making an offering
So that we can keep the TV Mass on the air.
May God bless you, your family members, and your friends.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done,
On Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
And graciously grant peace in our day,
That by the help of Your mercy we may be freed from sin
And safe from all distress,
As we await the Blessed hope
And the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours
Now and forever.
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to Your Apostles,
“Peace I leave you, My peace I give you,”
Look not on our sins, but on the faith of Your Church,
And graciously grant her peace and unity
In accordance with Your will,
Who live and reign forever and ever.
—Amen.
May the peace of the Risen Lord be with each of you.
—And with your spirit.
Share now the Lord’s peace.
And for those of you who are at home
Celebrating this Eucharist with us here
At Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,
We pray—and I pray—that you receive God’s choicest
Blessings and the peace of Christ in your lives.

But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Homily Transcript
∫ [Piano Music] ∫
He has set before you fire and water;
To whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand.
Before man are life and death, good and evil;
Whichever he chooses shall be given him.
Immense is the wisdom of the Lord.
He is mighty in power and all-seeing.
The eyes of God are on those who fear Him.
He understands man’s every deed.
No one does He command to act unjustly;
I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
The Only Begotten Son of God,
Born of the Father before all ages,
God from God, Light from Light,
True God from True God,
Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
