Sisters and brothers, friends, again the Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. May the Word of God be always on our minds, on our lips, and in our hearts. Jesus told his disciples this parable. The Kingdom of Heaven is like a land owner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into the vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the land owner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, “You two go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.” So they went off. He went out again around noon, and around 3:00 and did likewise, going out around 5:00, the landowner found others standing around and said to them, “Why why do you stand here idly all day?” They answered, “Because no one has hired us.” He said to them, “You two go into my vineyard.” When it was evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his foremen, “Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.” When those who had started about five:00 came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more. But each of them also got the usual daily wage. On receiving it, they grumbled against the land owner, saying, “These last ones worked only one hour. You have made them equal to us who bore the day’s burden and heat.” He said to one of them in reply, “My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous? Thus, the last will be first and the first will be last. Friends, the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

This Gospel makes me think about what happens every year around Christmas time. You see, I am the uncle of 10 nieces and nephews. 10 nieces and nephews. And I try to be very fair to my 10 nieces and nephews. And I think I am fair and just and generous to my 10 nieces and nephews. However, you see, two of them are my godchildren. Two of them, uh, both girls. Two of them are my godchildren. So, don’t you know that at Christmas time they get a little something extra? And it’s really hard to explain to the other eight nieces and nephews when two of them get a little bit more. All I can say is that’s the way it is. They’re my godaughters. And so yeah, at Christmas they get a little something extra. You know, um we we hear that we hear about God’s profound generosity in the Gospel. In the Gospel for today, we remember very powerfully that God wants to bless us abundantly. God wants us really to receive in abundance in many ways in our lives. We we get that message from the parable that Jesus offers us for today. But I think there’s another message as well, and this has to go with the first people who received um their wages last and were measuring up against the last people who got the same as they did, working all day. And and I want to sometimes say this. I want to sometimes say this to those first workers who got their pay last. I want to say, stop comparing yourself. Stop comparing God’s generosity. Stop comparing how God wants to be abundant in many different ways. You see, God’s ways are beyond our ways. We heard that, Colleen. God’s thoughts are above our thoughts. We heard that, Colleen. You know, we, you know, God’s way of being abundant is beyond us. And so, let’s not spend a lot of time like my nieces and nephews. Let’s not spend a lot of time comparing with each other about how God blesses us abundantly because God blesses every single one of us in different ways, very different ways. Some with physical abundance, some with intellectual abundance, some with emotional abundance, and some with spiritual abundance. And let’s not get too caught up with how God has blessed each one of us, but rather spend a lot of time thanking God for all the gifts that each one of us has received so abundantly. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter what country we came from or what job we have or or or what gender we are. Rather, we count the blessings that God has offered us and we get down on our knees and we thank God for those blessings every day. Uh you know the saying goes that you should count your blessings, not count your brothers blessings and compare the two. Count your blessings that God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit have so abundantly bestowed upon us. Count your blessings. God’s ways are not our ways. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts.

Shall we pray the Apostles Creed?

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontious Pilot, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day, he rose again from the dead. He ascended into he and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he’ll come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Friends, we offer our prayers and our petitions. Please respond. Lord, hear our prayer. For our Holy Father and members of the clergy. May their words and actions bring Christ’s message of eternal life to all. We pray to the Lord. Lord our pray for all people as we enter the autumn season this week. Receive with favor, O Lord, we pray. Receive with favor the offerings of your people that what they profess with devotion and faith may be theirs through these heavenly mysteries. We make this prayer always through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Friends, let us give thanks. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just. It is truly right and just, our duty, our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and eternal God. He gave it to his disciples saying, “Take this, take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my Body which will be given up for you.

The mystery of faith. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, [singing] until you come again.

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of Jesus’s death and Resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the Bread of Life and the Chalice of Salvation, giving thanks that you’ve held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ Jesus, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your Church spread throughout the world. Bring her to the fullness of charity. Together with Leo, our Pope, Bla1, our Archbishop, and all the clergy, remember especially our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the Resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your presence and have mercy on us all. We pray that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Our Lady of Mercy, with the blessed Apostles and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-airs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.

Not only did Jesus teach us about God’s abundance, his Father’s abundance, uh Jesus also taught us to call God our Father. And so we pray, Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus, who said to your Apostles, “Peace I leave you, my peace I give you.” Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church. Not only did Jesus teach us about God’s abundance, his Father’s abundance, uh Jesus also taught us to call God our Father. And so we pray, Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. May the Word of God be always on our minds, on our lips, and in our hearts. Jesus told his disciples this parable. The Kingdom of Heaven is like a land owner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into the vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the land owner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, “You two go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.” So they went off. He went out again around noon, and around 3:00 and did likewise, going out around 5:00, the landowner found others standing around and said to them, “Why why do you stand here idly all day?” They answered, “Because no one has hired us.” He said to them, “You two go into my vineyard.” When it was evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his foremen, “Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.” When those who had started about five:00 came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more. But each of them also got the usual daily wage. On receiving it, they grumbled against the land owner, saying, “These last ones worked only one hour. You have made them equal to us who bore the day’s burden and heat.” He said to one of them in reply, “My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous? Thus, the last will be first and the first will be last. Friends, the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

This Gospel makes me think about what happens every year around Christmas time. You see, I am the uncle of 10 nieces and nephews. 10 nieces and nephews. And I try to be very fair to my 10 nieces and nephews. And I think I am fair and just and generous to my 10 nieces and nephews. However, you see, two of them are my godchildren. Two of them, uh, both girls. Two of them are my godchildren. So, don’t you know that at Christmas time they get a little something extra? And it’s really hard to explain to the other eight nieces and nephews when two of them get a little bit more. All I can say is that’s the way it is. They’re my godaughters. And so yeah, at Christmas they get a little something extra. You know, um we we hear that we hear about God’s profound generosity in the Gospel. In the Gospel for today, we remember very powerfully that God wants to bless us abundantly. God wants us really to receive in abundance in many ways in our lives. We we get that message from the parable that Jesus offers us for today. But I think there’s another message as well, and this has to go with the first people who received um their wages last and were measuring up against the last people who got the same as they did, working all day. And and I want to sometimes say this. I want to sometimes say this to those first workers who got their pay last. I want to say, stop comparing yourself. Stop comparing God’s generosity. Stop comparing how God wants to be abundant in many different ways. You see, God’s ways are beyond our ways. We heard that, Colleen. God’s thoughts are above our thoughts. We heard that, Colleen. You know, we, you know, God’s way of being abundant is beyond us. And so, let’s not spend a lot of time like my nieces and nephews. Let’s not spend a lot of time comparing with each other about how God blesses us abundantly because God blesses every single one of us in different ways, very different ways. Some with physical abundance, some with intellectual abundance, some with emotional abundance, and some with spiritual abundance. And let’s not get too caught up with how God has blessed each one of us, but rather spend a lot of time thanking God for all the gifts that each one of us has received so abundantly. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter what country we came from or what job we have or or or what gender we are. Rather, we count the blessings that God has offered us and we get down on our knees and we thank God for those blessings every day. Uh you know the saying goes that you should count your blessings, not count your brothers blessings and compare the two. Count your blessings that God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit have so abundantly bestowed upon us. Count your blessings. God’s ways are not our ways. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts.

Shall we pray the Apostles Creed?

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontious Pilot, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day, he rose again from the dead. He ascended into he and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he’ll come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
