How did you hear about Mercy Home?

Jim Jenness, a long time Mercy Home supporter, was a previous VML client through his work with Kellogg’s. He roped me in, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

What was your motivation for getting involved at Mercy Home?

My husband and I run the Chicago Marathon every year. Each year, we say we should run for charity, but when I would research, we could never find a good fit in the Chicago area. When I received a note from Jim calling all Mercy Home Heroes, it seemed like the perfect time to finally put our miles toward a cause. At first glance, Mercy Home seemed amazing, but I had no idea just how amazing. Mercy Home hosted an introduction night for all the Mercy Home Heroes at their boys home location where we were able to tour the location and learn more about what they do. I was completely blown away. It was truly an organization that synced up with my personal passions and values. The leadership philosophy and compassion within the walls of Mercy Home were undeniable. What stood out to me the most was not just that Mercy Home was doing a fantastic job of helping Chicago’s youth, but they are teaching skills and growing them into strong adults. They do not treat their students differently or give them excuses to be anything less then their full potential, and this is seen so much in the stories and interactions I had with the students at Mercy Home.

What advice would you have for future Mercy Home volunteers?

Don’t be afraid to get involved to the limit, ask questions and truly immerse yourself. The more you do the happier you will be! Make sure to take advantage of the free membership to the training programs. Training alone is so hard! Finally, always remember, you are much stronger then you think you are!

What is your favorite thing about your volunteer role and why?

It was so rewarding to be involved with such a fantastic organization. Marathons are tough! No matter what people say, they require a lot of grit. Knowing that each mile you ran was being dedicated to a good cause made each step so much easier. Also, knowing that there were so many kids who had much more perseverance then I was showing was truly inspirational. I was so humbled by my experience and will never forget when Andrew, a Mercy Home student, passed me on the course giving me a big high five and some encouragement. It was heart warming getting to meet Andrew, train with him and see him succeed in his goals!
