Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Homily Transcript

The following presentation is made possible by the generosity [music] of the viewers of Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago. Good morning and welcome to Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Today we celebrate the 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time. My name is Dan Riley. I am joined by Tom McNamera and Bridget Jerice and our celebrant is Father James Wallace.

What wondous love is [singing] this, oh my soul, [music] oh my soul? What [singing] wondrous love is this? [music] Oh my soul, what [singing] wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse [singing] for my soul? for my soul [music] to bear [singing] the dreadful curse for my [music] soul.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Good morning, brothers and sisters. Welcome for mass and happy Father’s Day. We are delighted to gather together around the Lord’s table here to receive his grace. So let us prepare ourselves by calling to mind our sins. Lord Jesus, you are mighty God and prince of peace. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. You are son of God and son of Mary. Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. You are word made flesh and splendor of the father. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. May almighty God have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Amen.

Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people [singing] of good will.

Glory [singing] to God in the highest and on earth peace to people [singing and music] of good will.

Let us pray. Grant, O Lord, that we may always revere and love your holy name. For you never deprive of your guidance those you set firm on the foundation of your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah said, “I hear the whisperings of many, terror on every side. Denounce. Let us denounce him. All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine. Perhaps he will be trapped. Then we can prevail and take our vengeance on him. But the Lord is with me like a mighty champion. My persecutors will stumble. They will not triumph. In their failure, they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion. Oh Lord of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them. For to you I have entrusted my cause. Sing to the Lord. Praise the Lord for he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Lord, [singing] in your great love, answer me. Lord, [singing] in your great love, [music] answer [singing] me. It is for you that I suffer taunts. [singing] That shame [music] has covered my face. To my own kin, [music and singing] I have become an outcast. A stranger [singing] to the children of my mother. Zeal for your house consumes me and taunts against you fall on me. Lord, [singing] in your great love, [music] answer me.

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans. Brothers and sisters, through one man sin entered the world and through sin death. And thus death came to all men. In as much as all sinned, for up to that time of the law, sin was in the world. Though sin is not accounted when there is no law. But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one, the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow for the many. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hallelu, [singing]

hallelu, hallelu, [singing] [music] hallelu, hallelu, hallelu. [singing] The Spirit of truth will testify to me, says the Lord, and you [music] also will [singing] testify. Hallelu, hallelu, [music] hallelu. [singing]

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to the 12, “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light. What you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.” Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my heavenly father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly father. The gospel of the Lord. Praise. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Why me, Lord, what have I ever done? To be worthy of one of the pleasures I’ve known. Tell me, Lord, what did I ever do to be worthy of you and the kindness you’ve shown? Lord, help me Jesus. I’ve wasted it. So help me, Jesus. I know what I am. And now that I know that I’ve needed you, so help me, Jesus. My soul’s in your hand. Try me, Lord, if you think there’s a way I could ever repay all I’ve taken from you. Maybe Lord, I could show

what I’ve been through myself on my way back to you. Lord, help me. Jesus, I’ve wasted [singing] it. So help me. Jesus, I know what I am. And now that I know that I’ve [singing] needed you, so help me, Jesus. My life’s in your hand. Jesus, my life’s in your hand. The guys bet me I wouldn’t be able to sing again. Another Merl Haggard song for you. So, there you go. But I just wanted to let you all know that Jesus is is with us and he’s he’s always calling us uh to something deeper. Uh he’s giving us grace so that he can save our souls, but that we could use that to help save others. So, we see that on display in the readings and especially on this Father’s Day weekend. Jeremiah is going through a terrible period of anguish. He’s struggling. Doesn’t feel like he’s deserved what he’s been given. But through his his own union with God, his reliance, his trust, his surrender to God, he’s able to be this great prophet for the other people. And of course, Jesus then is telling us not to be afraid in the gospel. You know, when we talk about fatherhood or motherhood or any sort of way of teaching or bestowing something on someone, there’s usually three levels. There’s the the very basic kind of biological level of fatherhood, just someone who can produce a child. Then there’s like the natural level of fatherhood, which is a little more obviously than just producing a child. It’s raising the child, providing for it, and so forth. But then there’s the deepest level, which is called spiritual fatherhood or spiritual motherhood. where you’re not just taking care of the body, but you’re taking care of the soul. You’re training someone how to how to be healthy and well in life, how to how to experience real peace and freedom, ultimately how to know Jesus Christ. That’s what is a real spiritual father, a real spiritual mother does. And that’s the crisis we have today. Anyone can just produce a child. And then most people can take care of a child, but to really take care of a child’s soul and even if you’re not a mother or father, we can all be be spiritual mothers or spiritual fathers to really tend to the soul. And that’s what Jesus says, don’t be afraid of someone who can kill the body. That is natural fathers, okay? But be afraid of someone who can kill the soul. We need these spiritual fathers. So we pray for that grace to be real spiritual fathers and mothers. The graces that we’ve been given by our own spiritual fathers and mothers. May we hand that on and may the the kingdom of God continue to come about. Amen.

And so friends, together now we profess our faith. I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, conssubstantial with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became manc. For our sake he was crucified under Pontious Pilot. He suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one holy, Catholic, and apostolic church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Trusting in our loving and merciful father, we pray now for the needs of the church and the world. Our response to each prayer will be Lord, hear our prayer. For our holy father and church leaders, may they be guided by the Holy Spirit as they spread Christ’s gospel message. We pray to the Lord. Lord here our pray for those who have recently lost a loved one. May our Lord fill their hearts with comfort and peace. We pray to the Lord. Lord our pray for the young people of Mercy home. May they continue to heal and rebuild their lives. We pray to the Lord. Lord Lord here our pray for all the fathers, grandfathers, godfathers and father figures in our lives. May the Lord bless them with courage, wisdom, guidance and love. We pray to the Lord. Lord here our pray. Loving and gracious God, draw near to us this day and answer these prayers. We make them through Christ our Lord. Amen. Amen. Bless

be God. [music]

Pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church. Receive, O Lord, the sacrifice of consiliation and praise, and grant that cleansed by its action, we may make offering of a heart pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours, he humbled himself and was born of the Virgin. By the passion of the cross, he freed us from unending death. And by rising from the dead, he gave us life eternal. And so with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hym of your glory, as without end we acclaim.

Holy, holy, [singing] holy [music] Lord God of host. [singing] [music] Heaven and earth are full of [singing] your glory.

Hosana in [singing] the [music] highest. Blessed is he who comes in [singing and music] the name of the Lord. Hosana in the highest.

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fountain of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dwfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples saying, “Take this all of you and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

The mystery of faith. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, [music] we proclaim your [singing] death, O Lord until you come again.

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity. together with Leo our Pope and Bla1 our bishop and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who’ve died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed virgin Mary, mother of God, blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-airs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God, almighty father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.

Amen. [singing] Amen. Amen. [singing]

The Savior’s command, formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not to temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, “Peace I leave you. My peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance to your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.” Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

Brothers and sisters, peace be with you. Thank you again for joining us. Um we are praying for you and your intentions which we have here. Always feel free to send them into us. On behalf of Father Donahghue and the entire staff and all the residents here at Mercy Home, thank you for your support of Mercy Home. May God bless you this day and all the days of your life.

Lamb of God, [singing] [music] you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb [music] of God, [singing] you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I’m not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

May we find in fuller measure [singing] what it is in Christ [music] we share here as in the world around [singing and music] us. All our very skills and arts wait the [singing and music] coming of the spirit into open [singing and music] minds and hearts. Here are symbols to [singing] remind us of our lifeong [music] need of grace. [singing] Here our table font [music] and pulpit. Here the cross [singing] has central place. Here in honesty of preaching. Here in silence [singing] as in speech. Here in newess [singing and music] and renewal. God the Spirit [singing] comes to [music] he.
